The Texans are hopeful that defensive coordinator Wade Phillips (kidney surgery) can coach from the coaches' box in Week 17.
Phillips was at the Texans' team facility Monday for two hours. The Texans initially believed Phillips would be out of commission for just 7-10 days, but we're now on day 12 of his absence from the sidelines and practices. It is perhaps by no coincidence that Houston is 0-2 since Phillips had surgery.

Updating an earlier item, Texans DC Wade Phillips is undergoing surgery for a kidney condition, and is expected to be away from the team for only 7-10 days.
Phillips was initially expected to be gone for "a couple weeks." The improved prognosis is excellent news for a Texans team that has caught an unbelievable number of bad breaks despite its 10-3 record. After allowing 26.7 points per game in 2010, the Texans have allowed an average of just 16 in Phillips' first year with Houston.

Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is taking a medical leave of absence in order to undergo an unknown surgical procedure.
Phillips is expected to be away from the team for "a couple weeks." The details of his issue are unknown right now. Phillips has had perhaps the biggest impact of any coaching move this season, transforming a Houston defense that was ranked 29th last season into a top-5 unit this season. Linebackers coach Reggie Herring, Phillips' "right-hand man" in Dallas, will be the interim coordinator.

Texans hired Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator.
Phillips had a tough go of it as the Cowboys' 2010 head coach, but there's no question that he was the finest defensive coordinator prospect on the open market. In his last stint as defensive boss (San Diego, 2004-2006), the Chargers leaped from 29th to fifth to first in the league in sacks, and a pass rush is what Houston so desperately needs to take pressure off its young secondary. Phillips will also be charged with making the Texans' defense more physical, probably implementing a 3-4 scheme.

Sidelined
Speaking at Texans OTAs Monday, coach Gary Kubiak described WR DeVier Posey's Achilles' rehab as "ahead of schedule."
Kubiak did admit Posey is a candidate to open the season on PUP, although that decision will be made at a much later date. A 2012 third-rounder out of Ohio State, Posey will not be counted on for 2013 impact after a slow rookie year.
