The deal contains $9 million guaranteed -- an initial roster bonus of $3 million, all of Smith's 2012 base salary, and $1 million of his 2013 salary. Another $9 million is available through incentives, though $5.25 million of them are "unlikely to be earned." The 2014 "conditional" third-round pick the Chiefs owe the 49ers as part of the Alex Smith trade will become a second-rounder if the Chiefs finish 8-8 or better.
Yikes. It would be a near-Palmerian price for a stopgap quarterback, and more highway robbery from a 49ers team that's made a habit of winning trades. 8-8 may seem challenging for a team that got outscored 425-211 last season, but it's very possible in a division that includes the Raiders and Chargers. Losing another second-rounder could be worth it for the Chiefs if it means a return to respectable football, but only in the short term.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed Wednesday Alex Smith won't have to compete with new signee Chase Daniel in training camp.
"Alex Smith is the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs," Reid said unambiguously. Daniel drew hype as a potential starter in free agency before signing a three-year, $10 million contract that includes $5 million guaranteed. That's a lot for a No. 2, but Smith won't lose his job barring a
season-ending
injury.

, but it's still notable after the Chiefs made a surprisingly large commitment to Chase Daniel in free agency. The trade price Kansas City paid for Smith should make him the unassailable starter in 2013, but he could have another controversy on his hands as early as 2014.

Chiefs acquired QB Alex Smith from the 49ers in exchange for a second-round draft pick in 2013 and a conditional third-round pick in the 2014 draft.
Four years after trading for the Patriots' backup quarterback, the Chiefs have swung a deal for the 49ers' clipboard holder. The price tag is shocking. The Niners received the 34th pick this year plus a 2014 conditional third-rounder that can escalate to an additional second-rounder -- for a career game manager. It's similar to what the Cardinals paid for Kevin Kolb in 2011 and Kansas City paid for Matt Cassel in 2009. Smith is an upgrade on Cassel, but his mediocre skill set prevents offenses from playing explosive football and threatening downfield. The deal is done, but won't be "official" until the new league year opens on March 12. The 49ers are now armed with
five
draft picks in the top 93. The Chiefs are slated to pick just twice in the top 95. Expect plenty of Smith checkdowns to Jamaal Charles in Andy Reid's pass-happy West Coast scheme.

There's no word on whether Draughn underwent surgery. A third-year UDFA out of North Carolina, Draughn was serviceable in the Jamaal Charles backup role last season, but will be guaranteed nothing under the new Kansas City regime. He can't afford to miss much time after Knile Davis was drafted in the third round.

Chiefs placed WR Terrance Copper (knee) on season-ending injured reserve and signed WR Junior Hemingway from the practice squad.
Copper, 31 in March, caught eight passes for 79 yards on the season, but he holds more value to the Chiefs as a special teams player. He's under contract for $840,000 in 2013. Hemingway was taken in the seventh round of this past year's draft out of Michigan.

The Chiefs thought Moeaki might be ready by now, but predictably, he's not. He does remain on track to be ready for training camp. Going into the final year of his rookie contract, the Chiefs have greased the skids for Moeaki's departure after signing Anthony Fasano and drafting Travis Kelce.
