Panthers LB Jon Beason's roster spot is safe.
Beat writer Joe Person thinks there's too much money left on Beason's deal for him to be cut, even if the Panthers wanted to pull the plug. Beason is scheduled to count $9.5 million against the salary cap this season, and the Panthers would be charged $12 million if they cut him. The 28-year-old expects to play weak-side linebacker in 2013, but Person opines that his future is on the strong side.

The Panthers have not approached WLB Jon Beason about a contract restructure.
Beason is in the third season of a six-year, $51.338M contract. Through the first two years of the deal, he's appeared in just five games and lost his middle linebacker job to Luke Kuechly. The Panthers have redone the deals of Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams, but Beason appears safe for now. He's on the books for $5.25M this year.

Beason has appeared in just five games over the last two seasons thanks to devastating injuries. He'll begin the transition to outside linebacker in earnest once training camp comes around. Luke Kuechly has seized Beason's old middle 'backer job.

Jon Beason said he expects to play weak-side linebacker this season.
Luke Kuechly will man the middle and Thomas Davis will swing over to the strong side. If healthy, Beason won't have a problem retaining solid IDP value on the weak side as Davis racked up 105 tackles from the position a year ago. However, health can't be taken for granted here. Beason has played in just five games since signing a five-year, $51.5 million contract extension in 2011. He's coming off both knee and shoulder surgeries.

The Panthers renegotiated Jonathan Stewart's contract in late January.
Stewart's fully guaranteed $1 million 2013 base salary was lowered to $715,000, while he received a $2.5 million "signing bonus." That money was culled from future bonuses in Stewart's six-year, $37.811 million deal. His $1.5 million 2014 base salary is also now fully guaranteed. It's further proof DeAngelo Williams will likely be a post-June 1 cut.

Pilares went down during Sunday's win over the Redskins and will need surgery. His second NFL season ends with two catches for 42 yards and nine kickoff returns for 216 yards. Joe Adams figures to carry the load in the return game going forward.
