Falcons signed franchise player CB Brent Grimes to a one-year, $10.281 million contract.
It's probably not a coincidence that Grimes signed his tender on the same day the Falcons were reported to be looking into a trade for Eagles CB Asante Samuel. Seeking a long-term deal, Grimes skipped the beginning of the Falcons' offseason program, but will likely play the good soldier now and report in hopes of advancing extension talks. The sides have until July 16 to reach a long-term agreement. Between Grimes' tender and Dunta Robinson's fully guaranteed $5 million salary, the Falcons will be paying their starting corners $15.431 million this season. It's highly unlikely Samuel is Atlanta bound.

The Falcons haven't had any "in-depth (contract) discussions" with franchise player CB Brent Grimes.
Grimes is skipping the beginning of Falcons' voluntary workouts. GM Thomas Dimitroff is open to striking a long-term deal, but talks might not gain forward momentum until after the draft. It's a distinct possibility Grimes will hold out of the Falcons' mandatory June minicamp if the sides are still working toward a deal.

Falcons CB Brent Grimes is among the franchise players who will not report for the beginning of voluntary offseason work on Monday.
As are 49ers FS Dashon Goldson and Cowboys OLB Anthony Spencer. They're joining fellow franchise players Drew Brees, Matt Forte, Wes Welker, Dwayne Bowe, Ray Rice, Cliff Avril and Calais Campbell in sitting out. Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff hinted at the time of Grimes' franchising he anticipated reaching a long-term accord, but the sides haven't made any public progress. The deadline to sign franchise players to long-term deals is July 16.

The player rep for free agent CB Brent Grimes says his the franchise player has "no plans to sign the tag at this time."
"We hope to be able to continue to discuss through all the issues at the appropriate time," added the agent. GM Thomas Dimitroff suggested the tag was applied so both sides could continue to work toward a long-term contract. Grimes may miss offseason workouts, but it's rare for a franchise player to miss game action.
