8/11/2012: Signed a six-year, $37.811 million contract. The deal contains $22.5 million guaranteed, including a $9 million signing bonus. ESPN's Pat Yasinskas says "there's almost no way" the Panthers can keep both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart on the 2013 roster.
Former GM Marty Hurney handcuffed the Panthers by committing $80.8 million to his two running backs. The logical solution now is to release Williams as a June 1 cut, allowing them to prorate his $4.85 million cap hit over two seasons. Cutting Stewart would result in an immediate $7 million cap hit. The Daily Show remains a strong buy in all Dynasty formats.

Jonathan Stewart underwent arthroscopic surgery Friday on his left ankle.
Panthers team doctor and renowned foot/ankle specialist Robert Anderson performed the surgery. Stewart sustained the ankle sprain in Week 12 and remained sidelined for the rest of the season. With the current coaching shakeups in Carolina of Rob Chudzinski leaving for the Browns head coach job and the firing of RBs coach John Settle, the Panthers could shift to more of a run-based, traditional offense going forward. This would bode well for Stewart's 2013 fantasy prospects. The ankle recovery will be a situation to watch because Stewart has struggled with foot, toe, and ankle issues since entering the NFL.

Panthers fired RBs coach John Settle.
It's the fallout from the Panthers becoming the first team in 12 years to have a quarterback as the leading rusher. Carolina had no base run game for most of the season, with the majority of their rushes coming out of the shotgun. Rob Chudzinski should opt for a more traditional power scheme in 2013, which would be good news for Jonathan Stewart. The Panthers also fired WRs coach Fred Graves and LBs coach Warren Belin.

Pilares went down during Sunday's win over the Redskins and will need surgery. His second NFL season ends with two catches for 42 yards and nine kickoff returns for 216 yards. Joe Adams figures to carry the load in the return game going forward.
