12/17/2011: Signed a seven-year, $49.85 million contract. The deal contains $25 million guaranteed, including a $6 million signing bonus. Another $300,000 is available annually based on Pro Bowl appearances. WLB Jerod Mayo admits the Patriots let Ahmad Bradshaw score on what proved to be the game-winning touchdown of Super Bowl XLVI.
"That’s situational football," Mayo said. "We needed Tommy (Brady) to get the ball and do his thing." Bradshaw attempted to go down at the one-yard line after the sea parted from the Patriots' six with 0:57 remaining, but his momentum carried him into the end zone. Eli Manning later said he was telling Bradshaw to fall down. Had Brady guided the Pats to a game-winning score, Bradshaw's mistake would have been remembered for a long time in New York.

Jerod Mayo's contract extension has a total value of $48.5 million, with $25 million guaranteed.
Mayo was making just $600,000 this season and ranks third on the Patriots with 68 tackles despite missing two games with a knee injury. The contract includes an average base salary of $9.7 million over five-years, with $25 million in bonus and/or guaranteed money.

Patriots agreed to terms with WLB Jerod Mayo on a five-year contract extension.
The financial details are not yet available. Coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance, Mayo is making just $600,000. He was set to make $750,000 in the final year of his rookie deal in 2012. Third on the Pats with 68 tackles despite missing two games with injury, Mayo has graded out as Pro Football Focus' eighth best 4-3 outside linebacker this season.

Mayo was active for the first time since Week 4, but did not start and ended up with just two tackles. He should quickly ramp back up to an every-down role.

ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Rob Gronkowski's back surgery recovery is expected to take ten weeks.
There are about 16 weeks left before Week 1. Profootballtalk has reported the back surgery will occur roughly 3-4 weeks following Gronkowski's Monday arm procedure, putting a tentative return timetable at 2-3 weeks before the season, assuming all healing proceeds without setbacks. At this point, we can't expect Gronkowski to participate at all in the preseason, but he still has a shot to be ready for Opening Day. The Pats open Sunday, September 8 at Buffalo.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.

The Patriots still have "high hopes" for TE Jake Ballard (knee).
Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices. Ballard caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns while with the Giants during the 2011 season. He sustained a torn left ACL during that year's Super Bowl.
