ESPN Boston believes WR Matt Slater is a better bet to crack the Patriots' 53 than Jabar Gaffney.
Of Slater, Gaffney, Deion Branch and Julian Edelman, beat writer Mike Reiss believes Slater is the "No. 1 lock" because of his special teams prowess. Reiss believes Gaffney and Edelman will earn roster spots, as well. Reiss has Branch as one of the odd-men-out of New England's receiver crunch.

The special teams ace and team captain was a priority signing for the Patriots. While he's irrelevant in fantasy circles with just one catch in 59 career games, Slater is a "glue" player in New England.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss expects re-signing free agent WR Matt Slater to be a "top priority" for the Patriots.
The Patriots' special teams captain, Slater also some time at safety in 2011 in addition to his limited snaps on offense. He has one catch in 59 career games. Whatever team or role he ends up with in 2012, he won't be fantasy relevant.

Patriots WR Matt Slater started at safety and played 70-of-73 defensive snaps in Sunday's win over the Colts.
Slater did play a little safety at UCLA and has spent some time there as a rookie, so this one isn't completely out of left field. He racked up seven tackles and forced a fumble. The Patriots' pass defense is ranked dead last in the league.

ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

Profootballtalk.com reports the lingering infection has cleared from Rob Gronkowski's arm, and his new plate was installed during Monday's surgery.
Gronkowski emerged from surgery Monday afternoon. The new plate will continue to hold together the fracture in his left forearm, which was surgically repaired four times because of complications due to the infection. Gronkowski is now expected to undergo back surgery in 3-4 weeks, the recovery timetable for which will last roughly ten weeks. He's still got a good chance to get in some late-training camp time, and be all systems go for Week 1 at Buffalo.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.

The Patriots still have "high hopes" for TE Jake Ballard (knee).
Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices. Ballard caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns while with the Giants during the 2011 season. He sustained a torn left ACL during that year's Super Bowl.
