The Raiders "badly" wanted to re-sign DL Desmond Bryant before he inked a five-year, $34 million deal with the Browns.
An on-the-rise defensive lineman who just turned 27, Bryant is the exact kind of player the rebuilding Raiders shouldn't have let get away, but they have just $75 million to spend for 2013 thanks to an incomprehensible $48 million in dead money. Bryant was scooped up on day one of free agency. He also drew interest from the 49ers. Bryant is going to be a difference maker in Cleveland.

Browns signed DL Desmond Bryant, formerly of the Raiders, to a five-year, $34 million contract with $15 million guaranteed.
We love it. Bryant shows a relentless motor, can both rush the passer and stuff the run, possesses scheme versatility at 6-foot-6, 300 with athleticism, and played his college ball at Harvard. Cleveland's 3-4 front seven is coming together with Bryant and Ahtyba Rubin likely on the ends, Phil Taylor at nose tackle, and Paul Kruger and Jabaal Sheard as rush 'backers. The inside linebackers project to be D'Qwell Jackson and James-Michael Johnson. Looks good to us.

CSN Bay Area confirms the 49ers are interested in free agent DL Desmond Bryant, but have yet to schedule a visit.
Bryant will just have to jut across the bay once the sides schedule a visit. He'd be a readymade replacement for Ricky Jean-Francois, and probably an upgrade.

Yahoo's Jason Cole reports the Patriots, 49ers, Eagles, Seahawks, and Jaguars are all showing interest in free agent DL Desmond Bryant.
A favorite free-agent sleeper, 27-year-old Bryant has a scheme versatile body type at 6-foot-6, 300, and has stuck out to us when watching Raiders 2011 and 2012 game tape. Cole's report seems agent-driven considering all of the teams mentioned, but we wouldn't be surprised if he commanded lucrative money.

Coach Rob Chudzinski insists Trent Richardson's (leg) absence from OTAs — and likely minicamp — is "precautionary."
"We'll take it day-by-day," Chud said. We don't doubt that the Browns are being extra cautious with last year's No. 3 overall pick, but the problem is Richardson requiring so much caution to begin with. He's been banged up since the second his name was called in New York, and never really approached 100 percent health as a rookie. Richardson's upside remains sky high — there's a reason he was the No. 3 pick — but he must prove he can stay healthy as a sophomore. Constant nagging injuries won't cut it in the rugged AFC North.

Browns WR David Nelson (knee surgery) isn't participating in this week's voluntary workouts.
Nelson is still rehabbing his torn ACL, but should be ready for June's mandatory minicamp. At 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, Nelson joins Greg Little and Josh Gordon to form one of the biggest receiver trios in the league. With new coach Rob Chudzinski's history of heavily utilizing the tight end, however, it's a poor bet Nelson will approach his 2011 stat line of 61/658/5 as the fourth option in the offense.
