Aaron Hernandez's shoulder operation has been termed as a "minor scope," and is not expected to affect his status for training camp.
Hernandez could be ready to return as early as June's mandatory minicamp. The operation took place two weeks ago. Per reporter Greg A. Bedard, Hernandez could have been ready on a "much quicker" timetable were it the regular season. Any surgery is a concern for a player with Hernandez's injury history, but he's escaped his latest ailment with a best-case scenario.

Sources tell NFL.com that Hernandez will miss both OTAs and minicamps, but the "likelihood" is that he'll be ready for training camp. It's still a concern for a player that has struggled mightily to stay healthy, as he's missed 10 games over the last two seasons due to ankle, concussion and knee issues. It's unclear when this injury occurred, but the Patriots now have medical flags next to both their starting tight ends as Rob Gronkowski's arm woes continue. Hernandez has never made it through a full season healthy in his three-year NFL career.

Aaron Hernandez said he's focusing his offseason workouts toward staying healthy for a full season.
Hernandez has missed 10 games through three seasons. This offseason, he's living in Los Angeles to get away from distractions and has altered his workout regimen. "I'd say more attention to specific muscles instead of just doing the basic bench, squat and all that other stuff," he said. "I'd say I started a little earlier this year to maybe try to get through 16 games." Over the last two years (24 games played), Hernandez has averaged 5.4 catches for 58.0 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. He's going to have a monster year if he stays healthy.

ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Rob Gronkowski's back surgery recovery is expected to take ten weeks.
There are about 16 weeks left before Week 1. Profootballtalk has reported the back surgery will occur roughly 3-4 weeks following Gronkowski's Monday arm procedure, putting a tentative return timetable at 2-3 weeks before the season, assuming all healing proceeds without setbacks. At this point, we can't expect Gronkowski to participate at all in the preseason, but he still has a shot to be ready for Opening Day. The Pats open Sunday, September 8 at Buffalo.

The Patriots still have "high hopes" for TE Jake Ballard (knee).
Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices. Ballard caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns while with the Giants during the 2011 season. He sustained a torn left ACL during that year's Super Bowl.
