ESPN 1500 Twin Cities believes Toby Gerhart could be put on the trade block "once injuries start hitting in camp."
Ace beat writer Tom Pelissero touted Gerhart as a trade candidate earlier this offseason, and thinks the Vikes could use a mid- to late-round pick on a back with an eye toward a future trade. The No. 51 overall pick of the 2010 draft, Gerhart is going into the final year of his rookie deal. The Vikes value Gerhart as a pass-protector, but obviously have little use for his running ability behind freak-of-nature Adrian Peterson.

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities wonders if the Vikings could trade Toby Gerhart.
Gerhart is entering a contract year, and he's coming off a career-worst season. Occasionally spelling Adrian Peterson, Gerhart rushed just 50 times for 169 yards (3.4 YPC) and one touchdown. He does have value as a third-down back who excels in pass protection, though, so he could bring back a late-round pick. Ultimately, Gerhart is much more likely to stay in Minnesota.

Toby Gerhart rushed eight times for 31 yards with a touchdown in the Vikings' Week 16 win over the Texans.
Even though the Vikings were only up 16-6 in the fourth quarter, the Vikings used more Gerhart than Adrian Peterson. It culminated when Gerhart got a carry from three yards out with just under five minutes left and powerfully pushed the pile into the end zone for his first touchdown of the year. He'll return to his caddy role against the Packers in Week 17.

Toby Gerhart rushed one time for six yards and caught two passes for 20 yards in Week 8 against the Bucs.
Gerhart has been relegated to a strict back-up role. He doesn't even play on third downs anymore and is just a handcuff to Adrian Peterson.

GM Rick Spielman gives Christian Ponder "just as much credit for getting us in the playoffs" as Adrian Peterson.
Spielman was referring specifically to Ponder's play when the Vikings won their final four games of the regular season. During that time, he completed 60.6 percent of his passes and threw just one interception, but averaged a mere 157.5 yards per game and totaled four passing scores. These comments are another case of Spielman trying to pump up Ponder's confidence. He's ready to ride or die with his 2011 No. 12 overall pick.

Adrian Peterson said his goal for this season is to run for 2,500 yards.
Peterson rumbled for 2,097 last season even though he was coming off a knee reconstruction and playing through a sports hernia. In order to reach 2,500 yards, he'd need to average 156.25 yards per day over 16 games. It's not going to happen, but Peterson is set up for another run at Eric Dickerson's single-season record of 2,105 yards. Lead-blocker Jerome Felton and mauling tackle Phil Loadholt are both back and Peterson will be 21 months removed from his ACL tear by the time Week 1 rolls around.

Vikings WR Greg Childs (torn patellar tendons) has resumed sprinting and cutting.
"All the necessary things I need to be doing, I'm doing now," Childs said. "I still do my cuts and my runs full speed. There is no change in the way I run or the way I play. My routes are still the same." Despite the progress, Childs admits he's not close to 100 percent. The Vikings are operating under the assumption Childs "may never play a meaningful down in the NFL." So should fantasy owners.
