Patriots re-signed restricted free agent TE Michael Hoomanawanui to a one-year, $1.323 million contract.
Hoomanawanui, 25 in July, was signed by the Patriots prior to last season after spending two years with the Rams as a fifth-round pick. He appeared in 14 games for New England, registering five catches for 109 yards. Hoomanawanui is used almost exclusively as a blocker.

Michael Hoomanawanui played on 50-of-59 snaps after Rob Gronkowski (forearm) left Sunday's Divisional Round win.
Hoomanawanui may have taken Gronkowski's snaps, but he didn't play the same role. The 6'4/263 behemoth didn't see a single target, instead staying in-line and being asked exclusively to block. Shane Vereen is a better bet to pick up passing-game looks.

Patriots signed TE Michael Hoomanawanui to a one-year contract.
Hoomanawanui was waived by the Rams on Sunday, added to the Redskins practice squad Tuesday and is now part of the Patriots' 53-man roster. He's reunited with OC Josh McDaniels, who coached the oft-injured blocker in St. Louis. Hoomanawanui is expected to slide in as the No. 4 tight end, taking the place of a sidelined Visanthe Shiancoe.

The Josh McDaniels connection strikes again. Hoomanawanui joined the Redskins' practice squad after getting waived by the Rams, but the Pats are in the market for more tight end depth behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. The oft-injured "Big Mike" would slide in behind Daniel Fells as the No. 4 tight end. Visanthe Shiancoe (undisclosed) might be headed for injured reserve.

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was spotted working out on Wednesday with no added protection on his right foot.
Although Edelman didn't participate in practice, it's a step in the right direction. The shifty wide receiver is squarely on the roster bubble, and is battling Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins for a roster spot. He'll need to be healthy for training camp if he's to have any shot at making the team.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport confirms Rob Gronkowski (back surgery, arm surgery) will open camp on the active/PUP list.
ESPN's Adam Schefter had the news first on Tuesday, but Rapsheet has chimed in with slightly stronger language, saying it "will" happen. Per Rapsheet, the Pats haven't given up hope that Gronk will be ready for Week 1, but we'd assume it's a fanciful hope. Gronk isn't a Peterson-esque healer, while the Pats have every reason to exercise extreme caution with their game-changing tight end.

A law enforcement official tells FOX Boston that Aaron Hernandez "appears to be directly tied to the homicide" of "associate" Odin Lloyd in North Attleboro, Mass.
There are many important things to remember here, namely FOX 25 is not a typical Rotoworld source, and Hernandez has
yet to be charged with a crime
. That being said, the storm clouds appear to be gathering for the star tight end. FOX Boston reports Hernandez, Lloyd and two other men left a Boston-area bar in a car
driven by Hernandez
on the night of the homicide, but Odin was the only passenger not to make it back to Hernandez's house. Further, forensic evidence has reportedly placed a vehicle driven by Hernandez at "one of the crime scenes in (the) case." Police are still searching for a second vehicle. Thus far, Hernandez has declined comment.
