Joique Bell would like to be the Lions' kick returner this season.
Bell sees the writing on the wall in a crowded backfield and knows he needs to become a special teams contributor to make the team. Free agent Stefan Logan, the Lions' return man for much of last season, isn't coming back, and Bell replaced him in Week 17. Bell brought back two kicks for 54 yards, but also lost a fumble. Rookies Theo Riddick and Corey Fuller could also be options.

Lions re-signed exclusive rights free agents RB Joique Bell, FB/RB Shaun Chapas and S Ricardo Silva.
They also announced the re-signing of WR Kris Durham, who was tendered in early March. Bell is the only guarantee to make the roster after turning 134 touches into 899 yards from scrimmage last season, but his role will be dramatically reduced with the signing of Reggie Bush. Bell will only be a factor in fantasy leagues if Bush goes down with injury.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz insists Joique Bell and Mikel Leshoure will remain a part of the offense in 2013 despite the signing of Reggie Bush.
"We have a lot of confidence in (Bell and Leshoure)," Schwartz said. "Both of those guys are going to be good players that we continue to move forward with, and they all have unique skill sets." Bush's addition is a bigger concern for Bell than Leshoure, as Bush will supplant him on passing downs. Bell's 52 catches were fifth amongst running backs last season. He'll need a Bush injury to reemerge as a fantasy factor.

Joique Bell said he expects to be used extensively in the passing game again next season.
The Lions have hired a new running backs coach in Curtis Modkins, which is good news for Bell. The two crossed paths in Buffalo while Bell was on the Bills' practice squad. He said Modkins worked "heavily" with him on pass catching and protection. Bell finished last season with 52 catches, seizing backup duties from Kevin Smith early on.

Mikel Leshoure is being held out of team drills at Lions OTAs with an undisclosed injury.
"He's battling some stuff," coach Jim Schwartz said. "He can do some individual stuff but he's not ready to do any team work." There are no indications that the injury is serious, but it's worrisome news for a player who's had trouble staying healthy since being drafted. Leshoure can ill-afford more leg ailments after plodding through 2012. For now, Leshoure remains penciled in as the Lions' short-yardage "specialist" despite last season's anemic 3.71 yards per carry.

MLive.com considers Ryan Broyles a breakout candidate this season.
Broyles is recovering from a torn right ACL, and the Lions' only notable offseason receiver addition was sixth-round pick Corey Fuller. They must feel comfortable with Broyles' progress. In a six-game stretch last season, Broyles caught 21 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Broyles is questionable for Week 1, but once he's back he'll have a ton of potential in the Lions' high-powered attack while working opposite Megatron.
