Coach Mike McCarthy insists the Packers are "counting on" 2011 first-round OT Derek Sherrod to be a "factor" in 2013.
The 32nd pick in 2011, Sherrod broke his right tibia and fibula in December of that year and didn't play a snap in 2012. The Packers remain concerned about whether Sherrod's leg will hold up in training camp, but he's returning to compete at left tackle. If Sherrod's health doesn't cooperate, RT Bryan Bulaga could end up kicking to Aaron Rodgers' blindside. The Packers are understandably down on Marshall Newhouse, who's struggled the past two seasons.

Packers OT Derek Sherrod is "still not out of the woods" in his recovery from the broken right tibia and fibula he sustained in December 2011.
The Packers don't know if Sherrod's leg will hold up in training camp. "You watch it on film, that's not your everyday (injury)," coach Mike McCarthy said. "I think anytime you break bones and you try to categorize injuries, there was more to it than that." The Packers have been hoping 2011 first-rounder Sherrod would push LT Marshall Newhouse. They may be forced to look elsewhere.

"I haven't done very well trying to speculate on when guys are coming back or not, but I hope he can work during the OTAs," said coach Mike McCarthy. Sherrod is expected to challenge Marshall Newhouse for the starting left tackle job.

The Packers believe OT Derek Sherrod (broken leg) will play again and could compete for a starting job this summer.
It remains to be seen whether Sherrod, who spent the entire season on PUP, will make it back for Green Bay's offseason program. "I expect him to be back and competing for a spot," OL coach James Campen said. "He was just on the cusp of doing some very good things when he got hurt. We expect him to be back and ready to go." Sherrod played left tackle in college. The Packers had tried him at right tackle and guard before his injury.
