Jets OLB Quinton Coples says he's responded with increased effort after coach Rex Ryan called him out last week.
"I responded in the weight room and got better," Coples said. "I gave better effort and made sure that won’t happen again." Ryan's tactic worked with a player the Jets need to be a major pass-rushing presence off the edge this season. Coples has some serious ability, but is towering for a linebacker at 6-foot-6, 284 pounds. He's working to slim down. We'd guess he posts a nice sack total after tallying 5.5 as a rookie.

Jets DC Dennis Thurman reiterated Wednesday that Quinton Coples will be used as a stand-up edge rusher this season.
"QC will play with his hand in the dirt stand up," Thurman said. "We wouldn't do it if Quinton didn't have the ability to handle it." Coples was used as a more traditional left end last season, but is being relied on to get after the passer after the Jets used the No. 13 pick on Sheldon Richardson. A towering 6-foot-6, 284 pounds, Coples should shed some weight, but is still going to be enormous for a linebacker.

Coach Rex Ryan called out 2012 first-round pick Quinton Coples for lackluster weight-room performance on the first day of Jets rookie camp.
Coples isn't eligible for rookie camp, obviously, but Ryan took him to task for his offseason commitment level. "If Quinton doesn’t do a better job in the weight room he might have to ... he’s got to compete like anybody else for a job," said Ryan. "So I’m a little disappointed in Q in the weight room in the last day." Perhaps Rex was just trying to send a message. The Jets are counting on Coples to transform himself from a left end into a rush linebacker.

ESPN New York reports the Jets will move Quinton Coples to outside linebacker.
Coples (6-foot-6, 290) is obviously going to have to drop some weight to make the transition to stand-up edge rusher, but it explains why the Jets took Sheldon Richardson with the No. 13 overall pick in the draft. Coples, the 16th pick in last year's draft, led the Jets with 5.5 sacks as a rookie, even though he played just 47 percent of the snaps. Gang Green's new front-seven shapes up like this: LE Richardson, NT Kenrick Ellis, RE Muhammad Wilkerson, OLBs Coples and Antwan Barnes, ILBs Demario Davis and David Harris. It's a very solid group.

Santonio Holmes (foot) is not participating in voluntary workouts, as expected.
Holmes has been at Ohio State during the first set of Jets minicamps, taking classes and rehabbing his Lisfranc fracture. He admitted he couldn't play if there was a game this week, and may not even be a full go at training camp. Even if Holmes does get back to 100 percent, he should not be considered a starter in fantasy circles. He has recorded one 100-yard day in his last 20 games.

Jets WR Stephen Hill admits he didn't "understand the whole football concept" as a rookie.
That could be a problem. Hill also admits he was bothered by the intense media scrutiny. "We’re always on ESPN for something, and it was just a lot," Hill said. "It put pressure on learning, and then having to explain if I messed up, so that’s where most of the pressure was. ... It probably did throw me off during games, you’re just out there running." Hill has been put on notice by coach Rex Ryan, but WRs coach Sanjay Lal believes he could have a big year: "He can be whoever he wants to be." A large part of Hill's progress will depend on who's under center.
