Browns OC Norval Turner wants to get Brandon Weeden "speeded up."
"The physical act of your drop(back), putting your foot in the ground, turning the ball loose," Turner cited as something Weeden needs to get faster at. "What helps speed that up is recognizing where we want to throw the ball and then making quick decisions." Turner did go on to say Weeden's footwork is improving a "great deal," and that he's "got the physical skills to do what we want to do." The Browns don't want to anoint Weeden, but the starting job remains his to lose.

Brandon Weeden admits he was "surprised" by the Browns' signing of Brian Hoyer.
"I was surprised, but that’s the nature of the beast," Weeden said. "It’s part of this business, and if you start worrying about it, that’s too much to worry about." Hoyer's addition is an undeniable sign the Browns don't believe they're set at quarterback, but despite GM Mike Lombardi's noted admiration for the former Patriot, he's not a legitimate threat to Weeden. Between Weeden, Hoyer and Jason Campbell, the deck is still stacked in Weeden's favor. Hoyer's addition is worse news for Campbell. They'll battle for No. 2 duties after Weeden "beats out" Campbell.

Brandon Weeden opened OTAs as the clear No. 1 quarterback, as expected.
The new Browns regime inherited Weeden, but they're still going to give him a shot to run with the job. He has the skill set to succeed in Rob Chudzinski's vertical offense, a scheme that once sent Derek Anderson to the Pro Bowl. For now, Jason Campbell is merely quality competition.

ESPN Cleveland believes that if Brandon Weeden leads the Browns to a winning season, he will not be replaced in 2014.
That doesn't mean that the Browns won't draft a quarterback, but Weeden will be given a full season to prove himself under the new coaching staff. ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi continues to insist that the organization wants Weeden to succeed and that GM Mike Lombardi's influence is "greatly exaggerated." Weeden is in an even competition for the starting job with Jason Campbell, but he remains the heavy favorite to start Week 1.

Coach Rob Chudzinski insists Trent Richardson's (leg) absence from OTAs — and likely minicamp — is "precautionary."
"We'll take it day-by-day," Chud said. We don't doubt that the Browns are being extra cautious with last year's No. 3 overall pick, but the problem is Richardson requiring so much caution to begin with. He's been banged up since the second his name was called in New York, and never really approached 100 percent health as a rookie. Richardson's upside remains sky high — there's a reason he was the No. 3 pick — but he must prove he can stay healthy as a sophomore. Constant nagging injuries won't cut it in the rugged AFC North.

Browns WR David Nelson (knee surgery) isn't participating in this week's voluntary workouts.
Nelson is still rehabbing his torn ACL, but should be ready for June's mandatory minicamp. At 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, Nelson joins Greg Little and Josh Gordon to form one of the biggest receiver trios in the league. With new coach Rob Chudzinski's history of heavily utilizing the tight end, however, it's a poor bet Nelson will approach his 2011 stat line of 61/658/5 as the fourth option in the offense.
