Bengals second-round RB Giovani Bernard admitted he's expecting to play a complementary role as a rookie.
Bernard has more value in Dynasty formats than re-draft. BenJarvus Green-Ellis' contract is up after the 2014 season. "I think it's more so a complementary kind of thing," Bernard said. "I think we are both going to help each other out. I definitely had a chance to talk to him and he's the leader of that pack, he's the leader of the guys." Something around 170-190 total touches for Bernard this season is realistic. Green-Ellis will get the goal-line work.

The Bengals dialed up a "steady amount of screen passes" for second-round RB Giovani Bernard in rookie minicamp.
Per reporter Joe Reedy, there were multiple times where Bernard caught a screen and was "gone up the sideline." It's just the latest indication that the Bengals plan to use Bernard as a true change-of-pace back as a rookie, getting him 8-10 carries while featuring him in the passing game. The Bengals want to get Bernard and his elite athleticism out in space as much as possible.

Bengals OC Jay Gruden indicated that he doesn't plan to use No. 37 pick Giovani Bernard as a workhorse back.
"A unique back with the skill set that doesn't have to be a 25-carry guy," is how Gruden described Bernard. "He can be a 10-15 carry guy, catch eight balls, whatever it is, to help us out and make us more diverse." Gruden does believe Bernard offers "three-down" tools, but he's headed for a timeshare with power back BenJarvus Green-Ellis, at least initially. Gruden added that Bernard and sixth-round pick Rex Burkhead will be "competing for third-down spot."

Bengals selected UNC RB Giovani Bernard with the No. 37 overall pick.
Bernard (5-foot-8 3/8, 202) amassed 2,481 yards and 25 touchdowns on 423 college carries (5.9 YPC) before turning pro following his redshirt sophomore year. Perhaps most impressively, he averaged 46 receptions per season and scored twice on punt returns. Bernard ran a 4.53 forty with a 10-foot-2 broad jump at the Combine. A terrific receiver with some Brian Westbrook to his game, Bernard lacks physicality as a runner but combines lightning-quick, rapid-fire cuts with fantastic acceleration and lateral jukes. With the team allowing an adequate runner in BenJarvus Green-Ellis to handle the workload in 2012, expect Bernard to see a large number of touches, especially in pass situations, in 2013.

The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy "highly doubts" both Bernard Scott and Giovani Bernard will make the Bengals' 53-man roster.
In other words, Scott's roster spot is in jeopardy. Bernard obviously isn't going anywhere after being the first running back drafted last weekend. The Bengals re-signed Scott, 29, to a one-year deal last month. Cincinnati will likely keep four running backs: BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Bernard, special teams ace Cedric Peerman, and sixth-round pick Rex Burkhead.
