Chiefs GM John Dorsey said he feels comfortable with TE Travis Kelce, who fell to the third round in the draft due to major character concerns.
"We sat with him in the Combine interview, then I went on my own and talked to him ... at various points," Dorsey said. "I kind of got to know him over time. I feel very comfortable with the kid. He just needs to understand talent alone doesn’t get you success in this league." Kelce was suspended for the entire 2010 season at Cincinnati, and it was thought to be drug-related. He was described as a "trainwreck" character-wise prior to the draft.

Chiefs signed third-round TE Travis Kelce to a four-year contract.
Kelce, the No. 63 overall pick, is expected to compete for the starting job, and we wouldn't be surprised if he won it. The 23-year-old has soft hands, and he's already a dominant in-line blocker. Coach Andy Reid has compared Kelce to Jeremy Shockey in terms of playing style. Although there's good reason to be excited about Kelce, we don't expect him to be a TE1 in 2013.

Reid plans to make opposing defenses honor Kelce's speed, lining him up in a variety of spots including out wide. The Chiefs have revealed plenty of two-tight end formations during their offseason program with Kelce and Anthony Fasano both getting looks as receivers. While we're excited for Kelce's long-term prospects, we doubt he makes a TE1-caliber impact in 2013.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed No. 63 pick Travis Kelce will compete for the team's starting tight end job.
Kelce is far more talented (and healthy) than Tony Moeaki. His college tape also suggests Kelce is already just as good a blocker as Anthony Fasano. "He’s going to go in there and compete and we’ll see how it all works out," Reid said of Kelce. "He gives you another offensive threat, somebody that the defense will have to honor with his speed and athletic ability. You can move him out as a wide receiver and he’s a legitimate receiver in that spot."

There's no word on whether Draughn underwent surgery. A third-year UDFA out of North Carolina, Draughn was serviceable in the Jamaal Charles backup role last season, but will be guaranteed nothing under the new Kansas City regime. He can't afford to miss much time after Knile Davis was drafted in the third round.

Chiefs placed WR Terrance Copper (knee) on season-ending injured reserve and signed WR Junior Hemingway from the practice squad.
Copper, 31 in March, caught eight passes for 79 yards on the season, but he holds more value to the Chiefs as a special teams player. He's under contract for $840,000 in 2013. Hemingway was taken in the seventh round of this past year's draft out of Michigan.

Moeaki has already been ruled out for OTAs, and his status for camp remains up in the air. His roster spot won't be guaranteed after the Chiefs drafted Travis Kelce and signed Anthony Fasano. Moeaki is due $1.32 million in 2013, the final year of his rookie contract.
