Coach Ron Rivera said first-round DT Star Lotulelei has already "come a long way" with his pass rushing.
One of the reasons Lotulelei fell to 14th overall in the draft was because he earned a strict run defender label. The Panthers are teaching him to use his hands to shed blockers and are happy with the progress so far. They already know that Lotulelei is going to be an asset when asked to plug up running lanes.

Panthers agreed to terms with No. 14 overall pick DT Star Lotulelei on a four-year contract.
Bandied about as a potential top-five pick before the draft, Lotulelei tumbled to the Panthers at No. 14, where he fills a massive need. A poor-man's Haloti Ngata, Lotulelei is going to stuff running lanes, but may not rush the quarterback like Ngata has. The Panthers will count on Lotulelei and his 6-foot-2, 311-pound frame to occupy multiple blockers. An absolute workhorse in college — he played nearly every defensive snap as a senior — Lotulelei has the potential to make an impact from day one on an underrated young front seven.

Lotulelei (6-foot-3, 311) played all over the Utes' line, but was primarily a run defender. He's generated optimistic comparisons to Haloti Ngata for his strength and power at the point of attack. Lotulelei drew consistent double teams in the Pac 12 yet still managed 22.5 career tackles for loss, seven sacks, and four forced fumbles. A heart-efficiency scare at the Combine is no longer a concern. At his March 20 Pro Day, Lotulelei pumped 38 bench reps, ran 5.15 in the forty, and performed a 30-inch vertical leap. The concern among some NFL personnel men is Lotulelei will not be able to rush the quarterback in the pros. Defensive tackle has been a glaring hole in Carolina's defense for years now. The Panthers will pair him up with Dwan Edwards, who amassed six sacks last season, in the middle in an effort to shore up one of the league's weaker run defenses.

Both ESPN New York's Rich Cimini and CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora consider Utah DT Star Lotulelei a "possibility" for the Jets at No. 9.
Lotulelei goes 6-foot-3 and 311 pounds, and he'd be a great fit at nose tackle between RE Muhammad Wilkerson and LE Quinton Coples. The Jets need guys who can get to the quarterback, and Lotulelei could help occupy blockers in order to free up his teammates. He also had seven sacks of his own while at Utah. The Jets currently have 33-year-old Antonio Garay penciled in at nose tackle.

GM Dave Gettleman admitted that he doesn't know if Jonathan Stewart (ankles) will be ready for training camp.
"We'll see. Time will tell," Gettleman said. Stewart is coming off surgery on both of his ankles and did not participate in any of the offseason program. DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert split the first-team reps. If Stewart can't participate fully in camp, the likelihood of a full-blown committee to start the regular season will increase. The Carolina backfield is as cloudy as ever.

Pilares went down during Sunday's win over the Redskins and will need surgery. His second NFL season ends with two catches for 42 yards and nine kickoff returns for 216 yards. Joe Adams figures to carry the load in the return game going forward.

An undrafted free agent and former college basketball player, Williams was more of a practice-squad than 53-man roster candidate to begin with. The knee scope will further decrease Williams' odds of landing a job behind Greg Olsen.
