| Pos | Role | Name |
| C | 1 | Sidney Crosby ActiveSidney Crosby only narrowly lost the 2013 Hart Trophy. Alex Ovechkin finished with 1090 points in the Hart vote to Crosby's 1058. Crosby still ended up winning the Ted Lindsay Award, which is given to the league's top player as voted on by active members of the NHLPA. Jun 17 |
| 2 | Evgeni Malkin ActiveRay Shero believes Evgeni Malkin's best years are still to come. Shero and Malkin agreed to an eight-year, $76 million contract extension this week that will come with a $9.5 million annual cap hit. The 26-year-old center will team with Sidney Crosby as the franchise's top two players for the better part of the next decade, which is a scary thought considering the two have rarely been on the ice together over the past two seasons due to injuries. One thing Malkin definitely has to work on is the defensive side of his game, which was clearly lacking in the Penguins' loss to the Bruins. Jun 14 |
| 3 | Jussi Jokinen ActivePittsburgh Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma reiterated something the team seemed to admit from the start: Jussi Jokinen was acquired because of uncertainty surrounding Sidney Crosby. Jokinen actually acquitted himself early on before being phased out. It remains to be seen if he gets another chance with a team - interest seemed lukewarm on him during the 2013 season - but it sounds like he won't be back with the Penguins. Then again, with their free agent issues, you never know. Jun 9 |
| 4 | Brandon Sutter ActiveBrandon Sutter scored the only goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins in Tuesday's 6-1 Game 3 loss. Sutter snapped one past Tuukka Rask not long after Marc-Andre Fleury replaced Tomas Vokoun. For a minute, it appeared the Penguins were poised to get back into the game and the series, but Brad Marchand's goal less 25 seconds later seemingly put an end to that idea. Truth be told, if Sutter is Pittsburgh's leading scorer, chances are the night is not going as planned. Jun 3 |
| 5 | Dustin Jeffrey ActiveDustin Jeffrey notched a goal and an assist in Pittsburgh's 3-1 win over Ottawa Monday night. It was his first appearance since April 2 and he made the most of his 14:49 of ice time. "This was my opportunity," Jeffrey said. "I wanted to do something with it." Apr 23 |
| 6 | Joe Vitale ActiveJoe Vitale is a healthy scratch Friday night for the Penguins. Vitale has played the past two games, getting just over 10 minutes of ice time. He's notched one assist in the playoffs over six games. Tyler Kennedy rejoins the lineup in his place. Jun 7 |
| LW | 1 | Chris Kunitz ActiveChris Kunitz scored the lone goal for the Penguins in their 2-1 double-overtime loss to the Bruins in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals. Kunitz roofed home a goal 8:51 into the second period on a nifty centering, backhand pass from Paul Martin. But it was all that Pittsburgh could manage to get past Tuukka Rask. Despite the loss, the Penguins did everything they needed to do to get back into the series, playing a much more urgent and structured game. They outshot and outchanced the Bruins by a considerable margin, playing their best game but still falling short. Deflating in every sense of the word as they are now down 3-0 in the series. Evgeni Malkin had 21 shot attempts, getting 10 on goal, while Kris Letang had eight shots on net and led the team with 40:50 of ice time. Sidney Crosby had three shots on goal, and he hasn't scored in four games. Jun 6 |
| 2 | Brenden Morrow ActiveBrenden Morrow (undisclosed) is back in the Penguins' lineup for Game 5. Morrow didn't play in Game 4 against the Senators with what some believed was an arm injury. He has a goal and a helper in the series. The veteran takes the spot of Beau Bennett on the fourth line. May 24 |
| 3 | Matt Cooke ActiveMatt Cooke will be elevated to a top-six role for Wednesday's game against the Bruins. With Jarome Iginla dropping down, Cooke slides in on the left wing alongside Evgeni Malkin and James Neal. Cooke has four helpers in 13 games this postseason. Jun 5 |
| 4 | Tanner Glass ActiveTanner Glass played 9:56 of ice time in Pittsburgh's double overtime loss to Ottawa in Game 3. He suited up in four games against the Islanders in the first round, but Sunday's match was his first appearance in the semifinals. He replaced Joe Vitale in the lineup. May 20 |
| RW | 1 | James Neal ActiveThe Penguins' James Neal is on fire at the moment. In the Pens' last five periods of playoff hockey the talented winger has four goals and six points. Not that's production! May 25 |
| 2 | Jarome Iginla ActiveDo not expect to see Jarome Iginla re-signing with the Calgary Flames. The Flames dealt Iginla to Pittsburgh on March 27th, ending a run with Calgary that began during the playoffs of the 1996 season. Iginla, who turns 36 on July 1, is an unrestricted free agent who likely will choose a team that is capable of a Stanley Cup run, something that looks highly unlikely for the Flames at this time as it appears they are in a re-build mode. "I've never been in this situation before, with the uncertainly of what the future holds," Iginla said. "Maybe there's an opportunity to come back (to Pittsburgh). There's only positives up until our last series." Iginla will be one of the more intriguing free agents on the market as he has 530 career goals in the regular season to go with 576 assists but his skills are eroding at this time in his career and the Penguins could likely find a better use for the money he will be asking for as a UFA. Jun 10 |
| 3 | Pascal Dupuis ActivePittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero and the agent for Pascal Dupuis are expected to start contract talks next week, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Rob Rossi. According to Rossi, Shero wants to find out whether Dupuis is willing to re-sign with the Pens prior to free agency opening July 5. Dupuis is a top priority for Shero due to his scoring (45 goals over the last two seasons), place in the locker room and status as the preferred right winger of Sidney Crosby. However, Dupuis made just $1.5 million each of the last two seasons and will likely be seeking a hefty raise. With Crosby and Evgeni Malkin locked up to long-term, big-money deals and defenseman Kris Letang seeking one of his own, Shero is likely going to have to make some tough choices this summer. Jun 14 |
| 4 | Beau Bennett ActivePittsburgh Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said he expects Beau Bennett to play on one of the top two lines in his sophomore season. Considering the Penguins' slew of free agents, that's not as bold of a prediction as it might sound. It probably goes without saying, but having an opportunity with Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin makes the first-round pick legitimately fantasy relevant. Jun 9 |
| 5 | Tyler Kennedy ActiveTyler Kennedy has officially been reinserted into the Penguins' lineup for Game 4. Kennedy has been a healthy scratch the past two games. He has been a pretty productive player when in the lineup, with two goals and three assists in five tilts. Joe Vitale will sit. Jun 7 |
| 6 | Craig Adams ActiveThe Penguins know that it will be a major test for them to contain Erik Karlsson. Karlsson has a goal and five assists in five games during the playoffs. "I don't think he changes your game plan," Craig Adams said. "It just makes things more difficult when he's out there. His biggest asset is his skating. He carries the puck up the ice, but you can't always count on him playing at the point. He's just so mobile. He's got that ability to jump into the play and the speed to get back." May 14 |
| D | 1 | Kris Letang ActivePittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero and Kris Letang's agent, Kent Hughes, are set to meet in Boston on Wednesday to discuss Letang's potential contract extension. Letang has just one year left on his deal, and Shero is known for locking his players up before their contracts expire. The prevailing assumption is that Letang is seeking a deal worth at least $7 million per season. Whether the Pens' brass bites on this demand is the question. Stay tuned for any updates on the situation after the meeting transpires. Jun 19 |
| 2 | Paul Martin ActiveIt doesn't appear as though Paul Martin will require surgery for his "significant injury," which he played with for the last few games of the Penguins' playoff run. "Just met with the doctors [and] still have some other stuff to do," said Martin. "As of right now, I'm good." Coach Dan Bylsma and Martin would not divulge the nature of the ailment. Jun 11 |
| 3 | Matt Niskanen ActivePenguins Matt Niskanen recently found himself on the team's top defensive pairing alongside superstar Kris Letang. Niskanen, who plays a fairly well-rounded game, understands he must play a more defensive style when paired with the Norris Trophy finalist. "Being aware of when [Letang] is being aggressive up the ice, I've got to be more responsible to let him do what he does," Niskanen said. It's a testament to his versatility that Niskanen can be paired with such an offensive partner after spending time alongside stay-at-home blueliner Doug Murray. May 19 |
| 4 | Brooks Orpik ActiveBrooks Orpik felt awful after Boston center Patrice Bergeron scored the game-winning goal in double overtime in Game 3. "I think everybody can realize how we felt and I felt," said Orpik, who missed his check and failed to control a streaking Bergeron who deflected home the game winner. "You feel like you let 19 guys down. It's not a good feeling." Two shifts before the goal occurred Boston's Milan Lucic rocked Orpik with a stiff check, but the tough as nails Penguins blueliner didn't miss any playing time. Jun 6 |
| 5 | Deryk Engelland ActiveDeryk Engelland suited up for Pittsburgh in Game 2 against Boston. He replaced Mark Eaton in the lineup to add a more physical dimension to the Penguins' blueline. Engelland saw nearly 18 minutes of ice time in the Bruins' 6-1 win, while contributing two penalty minutes, two hits, one block and one shot. Jun 4 |
| 6 | Doug Murray ActiveDoug Murray hopes to be back with the Pittsburgh Penguins next season. "This is a very special team," he said. It's a great organization." Murray was acquired from San Jose when the Penguins tried to bulk up their roster close to the NHL trade deadline. He skated on the third defense pairing during the playoffs and finished with a minus-3 rating. Murray is eligible for unrestricted free agency next month of the Penguins don't sign him. Jun 12 |
| 7 | Simon Despres ActivePittsburgh Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma called Simon Despres a "top-four defenseman." Some might find this prognostication strange since Bylsma decided to scratch Despres in favor of marginal blueliners like Dave Engelland, but perhaps this is more of a long-term assessment. Of course, a potential different coach might feel more (or less) highly about Despres anyway, if a change comes to pass. Jun 9 |
| 8 | Robert Bortuzzo ActiveRobert Bortuzzo may get a much more regular role with the Pittsburgh Penguins next season. Douglas Murray and Mark Eaton are eligible to become unrestricted free agents next month, which could free up some playing time for him. "I've been working hard to get better," he said. "There are a lot of great defensemen here, but of course, I want to play." He skated in 15 games with the Penguins during the 2013 season and has 21 appearances of NHL experience in his career. Jun 11 |
| G | 1 | Marc-Andre Fleury ActiveMarc-Andre Fleury and GM Ray Shero spoke for 30 minutes on Tuesday. "We talked about the playoffs," said Shero. "This certainly is an area where he needs improvement on. Concentration and belief. Get back to where he was in 2008 and 2009. I believe he can do that." Goaltender coach Gilles Meloche has resigned, so Fleury will have a different voice helping him out next season. Jun 13 |
| 2 | Tomas Vokoun ActiveTomas Vokoun gave up one goal on 24 shots in the Penguins' 1-0 loss to the Bruins in Game 4 on Friday night. Sure, Vokoun wound up with four straight losses, but he was hardly the problem in this series for Pittsburgh. If anything, he was a big reason the Penguins got this far in the playoffs and had stayed in many of these games. For the most part, he was a very steady presence between the pipes, not giving up more than three goals in any game (the three on 12 shots in Game 2 his worst showing). Vokoun played in 20 games in the regular season and 11 in the postseason, posting a 2.01 goals-against average and .933 save percentage in the playoffs. Jun 7 |
| 3 | Eric Hartzell ActiveEric Hartzell has been named the College Player of the Year by USA Hockey and USCHO.com. He guided Quinnipiac University to a national title appearance, while posting a 30-7-5 record to go with a 1.57 GAA and a .933 save percentage. He signed an entry-level deal with Pittsburgh in April. May 29 |
| 4 | Jeff Zatkoff ActiveThe Pittsburgh Penguins have summoned Jeff Zatkoff. Pittsburgh's AHL-affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, has been eliminated from the playoffs. Zatkoff had a 1.93 GAA and .920 save percentage in 49 AHL contests, but he struggled in the postseason. Jun 3 |
