The New Jersey Devils have officially terminated Damien Brunner's contract.
The Devils and Brunner had the option of mutually parting ways after he cleared unconditional waivers. That freed up Brunner to sign with any NHL team, but he opted to ink a contract with HC Lugano in Switzerland. Brunner left about $1.7 million on the table by getting out of his contract early, which could have been avoided if he reported to AHL Albany after being assigned there. "He didn't report to Albany and when they don't report, you have the ability to do what we did, but there's nothing malicious in any way whatsoever and I have nothing negative to say about Damien," Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said. "Certainly, he did everything he could. It didn't work out, but it was his decision not to report, which is fine, and then we have rights that we can do and that's what we did."
