France were behind for the majority of the match, but a brace inside of four minutes by Antoine Griezmann turned things around, and they were able to advance to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland.
It was the worst possible start for the host country, as they handed Republic of Ireland a penalty chance which was converted, inside the first three minutes, the quickest penalty scored in the history of the tournament. France went into the halftime looking the weaker side, but some tactics were changed for the second half, and they payed off. Most important was shifting Griezmann to a central role, playing behind Olivier Giroud. Just after the hour mark, Griezmann leveled the match, heading home a fine cross from Manchester City right back Bacary Sagna. Just a few minutes later, Olivier Giroud headed a ball into Griezmann's path and he sizzled it past the Irish keeper. He nearly made it a hat trick within five minutes, but Shane Duffy fouled him and was sent off for the infraction. France couldn't distance themselves from then on, but they allowed Republic of Ireland virtually no chance to search for an equalizer. Jun 26 - 11:07 AM
