Lions selected BYU OLB Kyle Van Noy with the No. 40 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
Van Noy (6-foot-3 1/4, 243) was the 2013 FBS Independent Defensive Player of the Year, finishing his career with 62 tackles for loss, 26 sacks, seven picks, and 11 forced fumbles. He blocked three kicks on special teams. Van Noy ran 4.71 at the Combine, but underwhelmed in the broad jump (9-foot-4) and vertical (32 1/2"). A noted film junky, Van Noy is a better football player than athlete, but lacks explosiveness off the edge. He's like a less-physical version of Connor Barwin with cover skills, range, and plus closing speed. He should slot in at strong-side 'backer in Detroit, upgrading on Ashlee Palmer, and could rush the passer with his hand in the dirt in sub-packages. Fri, May 9, 2014 07:49:00 PM
