The Pac-12 has passed a rule which will require conference squads to win at least six games to achieve bowl eligibility.
That means that the possibility of a bowl at 5-7 is no longer going to be in the cards for the conference. The NCAA has been using teams in that phylum to fill extra bowl slots when needed depending on the strength of the field, with APR (academic progress rate) used as the determining factor. There was no need to include any 5-7 programs in the fray this past bowl season, but two such schools were required in 2016 and three in 2015. Ever-opinionated Washington State HC Mike Leach more or less shrugged his shoulders and rolled his eyes at the Pac-12's new rule, saying, "Why should we limit opportunities when other conferences aren't?" and adding that if his team happened to go 5-7 they could "probably use the practice" afforded to them by a bowl.
