Navy senior QB Zach Abey has moved to wide receiver.
Abey (6'2/218) posted 1,413 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground last season while working as starting quarterback for the Midshipmen, but the emergence of Malcolm Perry -- who started in the Military Bowl and has been tabbed as the team's starter over Abey moving forward -- has Navy trying him out in a different role. This move to receiver was made following the close of spring practice. Unlike in more traditional offensive systems, wideouts in HC Ken Niumatalolo's option attack are blockers first-and-foremost, pass-catchers secondarily. The team also discussed moving Abey to fullback (he had a tryout there during the aforementioned Military Bowl), but the depth chart is loaded there and it's a more difficult transition. He's already being listed as co-starter at "X" receiver. Niumatalolo said that Abey is "excited" by the possibilities of his positional shift. May 2 - 12:24 PM
