Florida State freshman QB James Blackman completed 18-of-26 passes for 233 yards and four touchdowns in Wednesday's 42-13 win over Southern Miss in the Independence Bowl.
The game started out in rocky fashion for the Seminoles, who fell behind 6-0 early in the first quarter. Then Blackman got things going. And how. The 6-foot-5, 185-pound true freshman would go on to throw three of his four touchdown passes before halftime to help FSU to a 23-6 advantage when the two teams hit the locker room. His quartet of touchdown passes on the afternoon set an Independence Bowl record. After being thrust into starting duties due to Deondre Francois' season-ending knee injury suffered in the opener, Blackman went on to throw for 2,230 yards with a 19/11 TD/INT ratio. He finished the year hot, tossing 10 touchdown passes in his final four games. Our best guess is that Blackman has flashed well enough this season -- albeit with some expected freshman inconsistencies -- that the quarterback situation shouldn't be considered an open/shut case for the offseason even with Francois on his way back from the injury.
