It took a sudden-death playoff, but Thomas Aiken outlasted Oliver Fisher when the South African buried a 30-footer for birdie on the first playoff hole to win the Africa Open.
The duo completed regulation in 20-under-par 264 at East London Golf Club in Eastern Cape, South Africa. Aiken closed with a 4-under 33-34=67 on the strength of an eagle and three birdies against one bogey. Fisher offset three bogeys with five birdies en route to a 2-under 35-34=69. This is Aiken's third European Tour title but first in his homeland. "I’ve been waiting for this for quite some time; I’ve won a couple of times overseas, but there is nothing like winning in front of a home crowd," he said. "The South African fans have been unbelievable throughout my whole career so it’s nice to finally get one for you guys. I always love coming back here, and it’s so great to finally get this trophy under my belt." Fifty-four-hole leader Emiliano Grillo faded to share fifth place two shots back after a Sunday 73. John Hahn and David Horsey tied for third one stroke outside the playoff. Feb 16 - 10:12 AM
