Anthony Kim is no longer fully exempt on the PGA TOUR via a Major Medical Extension.
He's been parked on 16 starts to bank $613,550 since his last start in 2012, but those terms have gone by the boards. Not that it matters, of course. In his interview with the Associated Press published on Sept. 30, AK acknowledged that it'll be some time before he considers a return to competition. That said, it was also evident that golf is merely a part of his past. Since he's no longer in need of status checks on the MME, we've removed the 30-year-old from our Injury Report. In an update written by Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press, Anthony Kim remains on the mend following a series of injuries over the last few years.
It's been just over a year since Sports Illustrated chronicled AK's well-being and whereabouts, but the golfer himself wasn't quoted in that story, which cited insurance protection well into eight figures if he didn't play golf again. "I paid well into the mid-six figures for the policy," Kim told the AP. "[The carrier] wouldn't have paid me every month had I not been to the doctors, showing them all my X-rays, doing all the treatment, the acupuncture, twice a day for physical therapy." Simply, his body isn't yet ready for the PGA TOUR. "I'm going to step away from the game for a little while and get my body pieced together. ... I've got so much ground to make up from injuries — rotator cuff, labrum, spinal fusion, hand injury. I've had six or seven surgeries in the last three-and-a-half years." Whenever/If he returns, Kim will have 16 starts on a Major Medical Extension to earn $613,550 and retain status. Wed, Sep 30, 2015 12:00:00 PM
Anthony Kim remains sidelined indefinitely and may be wrestling with a financial dilemma, according to Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck, who wrote an article on the golfer for the Sept. 22 edition of the magazine.
Shipnuck wove new reporting with quotes from old interviews in an attempt to piece AK's mystery together. Injuries, a philosophical disconnect with the PGA TOUR and the absence of a fit socially among members all contribute to Kim's disappearance, but perhaps the most relevant issue concerns an insurance policy that would reportedly pay him nearly $20 million for never hitting another golf ball in sanctioned competition. None of Kim's quotes are recent, so all of these angles as it relates to Kim's mindset today amounts to aggregate conjecture. If he returns, he'll be armed with a Major Medical Extension with 16 starts to earn $613,550 and retain status, but those numbers are mere formalities when compared to the saga that has so many golf fans and gamers scratching their heads. GolfChannel.com's John Hawkins connected with Anthony Kim's agent, Clarke Jones, on Sunday, but the meeting did little to move the needle in terms of if/when the three-time PGA TOUR winner will return to competition.
This week's Wells Fargo Championship marks the two-year anniversary of AK's last appearance in a PGA TOUR event. Injuries prevented him from playing from which he has a Major Medical Extension with 16 starts to earn $613,550 and retain status, but the incessant swirling of rumors have consumed the narrative for a while now. As for an idea of when we'll see Kim again, Jones said, "I’m hopeful it will be in 2014. Anything other than that is a guess, and I don’t like to guess. He’s a marvelous talent, but it has been a long time. There’s no denying that." Jones added that Kim isn't playing any golf, but he also ruled out the salacious rumors. "I can categorically deny that there has been any suspension," Jones said. "Nothing has been done by the PGA TOUR to prevent Anthony from returning. ... I’m going to go see him [in Texas] in a few weeks, and at that point, I’ll get a better definition of where he stands." Mon, Apr 28, 2014 12:14:00 PM
