Ernie Els peeled back the years with a flawless 5-under-par 34-33=67 and a 9-under 135 halfway total that earned him the clubhouse lead alongside Danny Willett after the morning starters had completed their rounds in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
The South African veteran is not only a three-time champion at the Emirates GC, but has shot under par in 46 of his 53 rounds on the course - and few will have tasted as sweet as this reminder of the glory days. He signed for birdies on 13, 3 and 5, but kept the best for the 18th (his 9th) where an eagle-3 compensated for the bogey-6 he made there in round one. He needed 28 putts and was in no doubt that is the secret to his success so far this week. "I feel like I'm looking forward to the weekend," he told after the round. "I'm not dreading the greens. That's where I've been for the last two or three years since I won The Open Championship. I feel very different. I feel like I don't mind making a two-footer or a four-footer. I feel I can do that, and my ball-striking has been okay." Late in the day Rafa Cabrera-Bello assumed the solo lead at 10-under. Feb 5 - 4:42 AM
