47-seed Ross Fisher eliminated 13-seed Bubba Watson 4-and-3 in Round of 16 play at the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play and will face 54-seed Hideto Tanihara in quarterfinal action later today. UPDATE: Fisher lost to Tanihara 4-and-2 and departs with a 3-2-0 record and T5, his fifth top 10 in 18 WGCs overall, and with 367 non-member FedExCup points, becomes eligible for Special Temporary Membership for the remainder of the season.
Watson was the Group 13 winner and departs with a 2-1-1 record. Fisher prevailed in Group 4 with a 2-1-0 record, advancing in a 2-man playoff. Watson took the early 1 UP lead with birdie-3 at hole 1, but the Englishman leveled it with a birdie-3 of his own at 2 (from 13'7"). Fisher won the third (with par), lost the fifth to Watson's second birdie from inside of 10 feet, and went 1 DOWN with bogey-4 at 7. Fisher squared the match at eight (par) and went 1 UP thru nine with another par 4, and never relinquished the lead from there.
