Tommy Gainey crafted a 5-under-par 32-33=65 in his opening round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial for a piece of the clubhouse lead.
Gainey was the fourth to post 65 today. He landed 14 greens in regulation and completed his round with a strokes gained-putting split just over 3.800. He got there thanks to a series of long-range conversions. In fact, of his six birdies, five measured 14'9" or longer. The highlights of the bunch found the cup from 38'4" (13th hole), 30'4" (second) and 29'10" (seventh). He placed third in last year's Colonial but didn't go this low in any round.
