Danny Willett will be hoping to kick start his slow-moving Masters defense with a bold display at this week’s WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play hosted by the Austin Country Club.
The Englishman has endured a very stop-start 11 months since exiting Augusta National with his Green Jacket. Four top six finishes will not have satisfied him whilst 13 finishes of T50 or worse will really hurt the pride. Moreover, when last seen on the course, he failed to break par once in four laps at the WGC Mexico Championship (on a track that ought to have suited his game). His record in this event is limited. On debut in 2015 he cruised to the semi finals before Gary Woodland ended his bid (he did, however claim the consolation match to end the week 6-1); last year 1.5 points from three saw him exit in the round robin stage. He owns an excellent 8-3-1 singles career record, but was last seen in the format being handed a sound 5&4 thrashing by Brooks Koepka in the Ryder Cup. To compound the form concerns he had to drop out of the Arnold Palmer Invitational with illness. The top seed in Group 11 he'll face Russell Knox, Bill Haas and K.T. Kim. Mar 20 - 12:18 PM
