Chris Wood, searching for first career win in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, has been granted a good draw ahead of this week’s action at Austin Country Club.
The Englishman starts the week with the poorest championship record in the field, having suffered five defeats in five matches. Lee Westwood knocked him out 3&1 in 2010, Bubba Watson did so 2&1 in 2013 and then last year he suffered losses to Bill Haas (2&1), Adam Scott (3&2) and Thomas Pieters (3&2). He doesn’t have the strongest career singles record either (7-11-1), but he did go 3-1 through the Paul Lawrie Match Play of 2015 and also made a solid Ryder Cup debut last Fall. He teamed up with Justin Rose to down Zach Johnson and Jimmy Walker, then took Dustin Johnson to the final hole (losing 1 down). It was somewhat surprising he got only two starts. Opened the season with MC-T11-T19 through the Desert Swing then T28 in the WGC Mexico Championship. Playing in Group 6, all of his opponents, like him, have won less than they’ve won in this event: Justin Thomas (0-3), Matt Fitzpatrick (1-2) and Kevin Na (3-4-1). Mar 21 - 6:50 AM
