Top-ranked and pre-tourney fave Jordan Spieth painted a 7-under-par 33-30=63 in the final round of the Sony Open in Hawaii to wrap his second appearance (MC/2014) on 19-under 261, currently T2 on the leaderboard. UPDATE: With play completed, Spieth finished in solo 3rd, eight shy of champion Justin Thomas.
The 5th-ranked player in the field closed out last week on Maui, his first start of the season, with a bogey-free 8-under 65 to back-door a T3, and is up seven places on today's lap. He began the final round in solo 9th after opening in 65-67-66. The 23-year-old birdied three straight two times, on holes 1-3, and on 10-12, adding circles on 16 and 18. His lone dropped shot was a bogey-4 at the fourth, but "saved" bogey from 17'9" after taking three to get on. For the week, the Texan circled 24 birdies versus five bogeys and is currently No. 1 in SG: Approach-the-Green at 10.410, but is 53rd in SG: Putting (0.252), including a tidy 3.367 in R4.
