Joost Luiten slammed the door shut on his rivals, carding an assured final round of 4-under-par 35-33=68 to total 16-under 272 and win the inaugural NBO Oman Open at Al Mouj Golf in Muscat, two clear of Chris Wood.
A sixth European Tour title for the Dutchman and the first he has won outside September since June 2013. He completed it in clinical fashion, starting the day in a tie for the lead with Matthew Southgate and Julien Guerrier, neither of whom have won at this level and were rarely in contention on Sunday. Instead Luiten and his good friend Chris Wood jockeyed for the top spot. Early in the round the shorter man made three quick birdies at 2, 3 and 4, the latter from kick-in range to take top spot alone. Wood's birdies, plus back-to-back bogeys from Luiten at 7 and 8, changed their roles. But more red came at 12 and 13 for the eventual winner and when he converted a par breaker from 20'0" on the 16th shortly before Wood's bogey at 17 the destiny of the trophy was assured. "This is why you play golf, to hold trophies," he said. "I need another couple to make the Ryder Cup team." Feb 18 - 7:21 AM
