Overnight leader Matthew Fitzpatrick stumbled out of the gate but recovered to record a 3-under-par 35-32=67 during round four of the Omega European Masters, giving him a four-day total of 17-under 263 to earn his spot in a playoff against Lucas Bjerregaard. Fitzpatrick circled a birdie at the first playoff hole to secure a victory, his fifth on the European Tour.
The 24-year-old Englishman entered the week as the defending champion and also entered the final round with a two-shot lead over Mike Lorenzo-Vera and four-shot lead over Lucas Bjerregaard. Everything was in his favor but bogeys at 3 and 6 brought him back to the field. Fitzpatrick righted the ship from there to rack up five birdies. The most impressive came at the closing, par-4 18th where he stuffed one close and rolled in a clutch birdie before doing the same thing on Hole No. 1 of the playoff (also the 18th). His victory here last year was also via a playoff (versus Scott Hend). Playing in his 106th ET event, this will go in the books as his fifth career victory. It does make you wonder if Thomas Bjorn's decision would have changed if Fitzpatrick would have done this a week or two sooner. Fitz became the first man to go back-to-back at Crans-sur-Sierre since Severiano Ballesteros in 1977-78. Sep 9 - 11:33 AM
