Overnight leader and World No. 40 Matt Kuchar fashioned a 2-under-par 34-35=69 in the final round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic for a 72-hole tally of 22-under 262, good for a one-shot win over runner-up Danny Lee (65) and his eighth PGA TOUR title in 428 events (417 pro).
The 40-year-old, a pre-tourney 50/1 outright, tastes victory for the first time since the RBC Heritage in April, 2014, and improves to 3-for-7 when leading/co-leading after 54 holes. After kicking off with 64-64-65, he added a four-birdie two-bogey effort in the finale to set a new tournament scoring record, eclipsing 21-under 263 by two players. The Georgia Tech alum, who led/co-led after every round, hit 11 (of 14) fairways and 13 greens in regulation, posting 1.923 putts per GIR. After beginning with a four-shot lead, he went out in 2-under, now leading by three, and came home in level-par, trading two birdies at 11 and 13 with back-to-back bogeys at 14 and 15 (3-putt). This was the Florida native's fourth Mayakoba, third top 25 and second top 10 (T3/2008), and is 2-for-2 on the season, checking in off a T57 at last week's Shriners. Nov 11 - 4:12 PM
