Russell Martin (neck) went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a walk in his return to action Tuesday.
Martin hadn't played since last Thursday due to neck soreness. The veteran backstop is hitting .273/.368/.545 with six home runs, 12 RBI, and a .914 OPS through 29 games this season.

Russell Martin (neck) is available off the bench Sunday.
Michael McKenry is starting again Sunday, but Martin's neck is feeling good enough that he can play if needed. The Pirates had Tony Sanchez around just in case Martin took a turn for the worse, but they've since sent him back to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Russell Martin is not in the Pirates' starting lineup on Friday due to a flareup of his recent neck soreness.
Martin was scratched from the Bucco's lineup on Tuesday due to the ailment, then sat out Wednesday's contest as well. The injury doesn't appear serious enough to warrant a trip to the disabled list, but could continue to cause Martin to miss a game here and there when it acts up. Michael McKenry will handle the catching duties while he's out.

Russell Martin was hitless in three at-bats in his return to the lineup Thursday.
He did reach base on a hit by pitch. Martin missed a couple games with a stiff neck, but he'll be fine.

McDonald landed on the DL last week with a lower back strain, but his elbow has also been an issue. The infielder is eligible to return from the DL on May 30, but it's not clear if he'll be ready at that time.

D'Arnaud has been out all season after undergoing surgery in March to repair a partially torn ligament in his thumb. The Pirates are expected to send him to the minors when he's healthy enough to return.

James McDonald (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on May 27.
That's assuming he gets through bullpen sessions on Tuesday and Friday with no issues. McDonald is slated to go four innings and/or throw 65 pitches for Altoona, so he'll need at least one additional rehab start before being activated. He's not a given to rejoin the rotation once healthy.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Thursday that Charlie Morton (elbow, shoulder) will make three more minor league rehab starts.
Morton's rehab from Tommy John surgery was recently halted due to some shoulder soreness, but he returned to game action Thursday with Double-A Altoona and gave up two runs in four innings. If all goes well, he could join the Pirates' rotation in the early part of June.

Jeff Karstens (shoulder) will be re-evaluated next week after having his throwing program shut down on Friday due to pain in his right shoulder.
Karstens had been expected to return to the Pirates' rotation in early June, but now that timetable will certainly be pushed back. He has dealt with discomfort in his shoulder since early in the spring.
