Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven were elected to the 2011 class of the Baseball Hall of Fame by the BBWAA.
Alomar and Blyleven fell just short of the honor last year, but got their just due on this year's ballot. Alomar received an astounding 90 percent of the vote. While he faded significantly over the final three years of his career, the .300 lifetime hitter made 12 consecutive All-Star appearances and won 10 Gold Glove awards, the most ever at the second base position. Blyleven went 287-250 with a 3.31 ERA over 22 major league seasons, including a 2.47 ERA over eight postseason starts. Armed with one of the game's legendary curveballs, Blyleven is fifth all-time with 3,701 strikeouts. His 14th time on the ballot, he finally made the Hall with 79.7 percent of the vote. Barry Larkin fell short at 62.1 percent, but has good momentum going into 2012. Jack Morris, Lee Smith, Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Edgar Martinez rounded out of the top portion of the ballot.

Andre Dawson was the lone selection for the 2010 class of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
It took a while, but "The Hawk" made it with his ninth chance on the ballot. Dawson compiled a .279/.323/.482 career batting line to go along with 2,774 career hits, 438 home runs, 1,591 RBI and one NL MVP Award. Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar both earned over 70 percent of the votes, but fell just short. It's a real shock to see Alomar not make it, as he was the heavy favorite leading up to the announcement. Perhaps the five blank BBWAA ballots would have made the difference. In any case, both should have a strong chance at election in the next two years. Jack Morris, Barry Larkin, Lee Smith, Edgar Martinez, Tim Raines and Mark McGwire rounded out the top portion of the ballot.

Devil Rays announced the retirement of second baseman Roberto Alomar.
Alomar has certainly done more harm than good to his team's chances the last three years, but the 12-time All-Star still belongs in the Hall of Fame as one of the top 10 second basemen of all-time. He ends his career with a .300/.371/.443 line and 210 homers, 1,503 runs scored, 1,134 RBI and 474 stolen bases in 17 seasons. It's pretty sad, but both he and Danny Bautista have helped the Rays with their decisions today. Jorge Cantu was a better bet than Alomar for this year and it looks like he'll be a regular now.
Sat, Mar 19, 2005 01:53:00 PM
The Rays will make an announcement regarding Roberto Alomar's future tomorrow. It's believed he will retire.
That would come as quite a shock. Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella said Alomar told him he was having trouble seeing. He's also been plagued by back problems in camp. If Alomar is done, Jorge Cantu will become Tampa Bay's starting second baseman. We never say never when it comes to the Rays, but it's unlikely they'd acquire another veteran to block him.

David Price (triceps) said he felt "great" during a bullpen session Tuesday.
The Rays are expected to set his rehab schedule on Wednesday. The club had thought that Price would need three rehab starts before returning, but he's looked better than expected and might not need that much time.

Rays manager Joe Maddon spoke to Alex Cobb (concussion), who said there's no timetable for his return.
Cobb was diagnosed with a concussion after he was hit in the head by a line drive on Saturday and is currently on the 7-day disabled list. He'll have to be cleared by MLB before returning to action and Maddon isn't ready to say for sure when that might be. It could be a lengthy absence.

Rays transferred RHP Jeff Niemann from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
