Rod Beck passed away Saturday in Phoenix at age 38.
Beck saved 286 games over 13 big-league seasons before his career ended when the Padres released him in 2004. He had 51 saves for the Cubs in 1998, but his best season came in 1992, when he had a 1.76 ERA and 17 saves in 92 innings for the Giants.

Padres requested unconditional release waivers on RHP Rod Beck.
Beck had a 6.38 ERA in 26 innings after spending the first month and a half on the restricted list. Even though he did nothing for the Padres, there will probably be a few teams looking to add him once he clears waivers. Our guess is that he'll head back to San Francisco.

Rod Beck, who was perfect as a closer in place of Trevor Hoffman last year, has struggled with his sixth-inning and mop-up role this season.
Well, take a racehorse and make him plow a field and see if his heart is in it. In his last five relief appearances, Beck has allowed five homers and has posted an ERA of 9.00. Even if Hoffman were to get hurt, he's behind Akinori Otsuka and Scott Linebrink. "I feel like I'm throwing the same stuff up there as last year, and I had a pretty good year last year," Beck said. Too bad he can't go back to December and choose the Rockies over the Padres.

Rod Beck gave up four runs in the 12th inning today to take the loss to the Yankees.
Beck got a chance to save a three-run lead because Trevor Hoffman blew a two-run in the ninth, but he wasn't able to convert. He has a 6.43 ERA since joining the Padres three weeks ago.

Suspended
Yasmani Grandal will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Tucson.
Grandal is still serving his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test, but he is allowed to begin a 10-game minor league assignment. The 24-year-old backstop is eligible to join the Padres on May 28 and may split playing time with Nick Hundley upon his return.

Forsythe has been taking batting practice for a week with no issues and is ready to take the next step. He's been out all season with plantar fasciitis in his right foot, so he'll need plenty of rehab at-bats before returning.

The Padres want Maybin to get around 30 rehab at-bats, so he should return sometime next week. The outfielder has been sidelined since mid-April with a nagging right wrist ailment.

Clayton Richard (illness) gave up two runs in six innings Tuesday in his second minor league rehab start with Triple-A Tucson.
Richard, out since May 4 with an intestinal virus, gave up five hits and no walks while striking out four. The southpaw threw 65 out of 94 pitches for strikes. It should be enough for the Padres to activate him from the disabled list.

Cory Luebke (elbow) has had his throwing program stopped for the second time this year in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery.
Luebke was shut down in early March before resuming sessions of catch on April 1, and he had progressed to throwing off a mound before this latest setback. Obviously none of this bodes well for his mission to return to live major league games by the All-Star break.

Wieland, currently on the 60-day disabled list, is nine months removed from Tommy John surgery and will continued to be moved along slowly. If he can avoid setbacks, Wieland should be game-ready sometime after the All-Star break.

Kelly will undergo Tommy John surgery during the first week of April. Obviously, he won't be making any contribution this season.
