Braves reassigned catcher Javy Lopez to minor league camp.
Lopez told the team he planned to retire entering camp. The 37-year-old entered camp as the favorite to back up Brian McCann, but he hit just .188/.270/.406 in 32 at-bats and proved to be the weakest defender among the four choices in camp. Now the Braves will pick from Clint Sammons, Corky Miller or Brayan Pena. Pena is also a below average defender, so the other two would seem to have the advantage.

Javy Lopez hit his second homer of the spring and walked Monday in two plate appearances against the Cardinals.
Lopez is 3-for-14 with a couple of walks. He remains the favorite to act as the backup for Brian McCann in Atlanta.

Javy Lopez had a two-run homer off Esteban Loaiza, a sac fly and a walk Friday in the Braves' 10-3 win over the Dodgers.
Now that he's willing to accept a backup role, Lopez looks like the favorite to play behind Brian McCann in Atlanta. As often as McCann figures to play, Lopez probably won't be one of the better $1 catchers. Still, McCann owners may want him for protection.

Braves signed catcher Javy Lopez to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Lopez, who starred from the Braves from 1992-2003, was out of the league last year after being cut by the Rockies in mid-March. He'll compete with Clint Sammons and Brayan Pena for a spot backing up Brian McCann in Atlanta. Perhaps he can still be useful enough against lefties to contribute in a limited role.

DeWitt appeared in four games with the Braves as a utility infielder. He should be optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett once he's deemed healthy enough to return.

Brandon Beachy (elbow) will make his first official minor league rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Gwinnett.
Beachy was cleared after he threw 29 pitches over two innings Tuesday during a start in extended spring training. He's expected to make around five starts in the minors, which puts him on pace to join the Braves around the anniversary of his Tommy John surgery on June 21. He's well worth stashing in most fantasy leagues.

Jonny Venters underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Thursday afternoon.
It's the second time he's had the procedure in his baseball career. Venters can now be ruled out for the remainder of the 2013 season and is also likely to miss the first couple months of the 2014 campaign. It's obviously a pretty big loss for the Atlanta bullpen.

Eric O'Flaherty will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn left ulnar collateral ligament.
It was inevitable after an MRI over the weekend revealed the bad news. In addition to obviously missing the rest of this season, O'Flaherty will likely be sidelined for the first couple months of the 2014 campaign, as well.

Jordan Walden (shoulder) will not be ready to be activated from the disabled list next Monday.
That's the first day he's eligible to return, but the right-hander is not quite far along enough. Walden will throw a bullpen session later this week and then head out on a short minor league rehab assignment. He should be ready for activation just before the end of May.

Obviously it's impossible to predict how much time Ayala might miss. David Carpenter has been recalled to take his spot in the bullpen.

Cristhian Martinez (shoulder) still doesn't have a timetable for his return.
The Braves reliever has been sidelined since April 12 with a right shoulder sprain, and apparently it was serious enough that the Braves still don't have any idea when he might be back. The right-hander had a 3.91 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 73 2/3 innings last year.
