Royals signed infielder Alex S. Gonzalez to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Gonzalez, 33, announced his retirement last May after starting out 4-for-36 with the Phillies. It's not much of a surprise to see him back, and he joined the one team he could potentially start for, though the Royals are certain to give Angel Berroa one more chance to keep his job.
Fri, Jan 12, 2007 04:20:00 PM
Phillies announced the retirement of infielder Alex Gonzalez.
Gonzalez was undoubtedly frustrated by the lack of playing time in Philadelphia, as well as his 4-for-36 start. Still, it seems unlikely that this will be a permanent retirement for the 33-year-old. Chris Coste will replace him on the Phillies' bench and act mostly as a pinch-hitter. If Gonzalez's career is truly over, he ends up at .243/.302/.391 with 137 homers in 1,396 games over 13 seasons.
Sun, May 21, 2006 01:51:00 PM
Phillies signed infielder Alex S. Gonzalez, who had been with the Devil Rays, to a one-year, $750,000 contract.
He can earn up to $1 million in performance bonuses, getting the full amount if he has 130 starts and 500 plate appearances. Gonzalez will serve as a backup at shortstop and third and may see some time in the outfield. There's a chance he'll get enough at-bats to produce a little fantasy value, but the Phillies will probably give Abraham Nunez a lot more playing time than Gonzalez initially.
Wed, Feb 8, 2006 03:05:00 PM
The Phillies are close to signing free-agent infielder Alex Gonzalez.
This is a team that should be looking to add a fifth outfielder or a right-handed-hitting first baseman. A fourth utility infielder hardly seems like a priority, though Gonzalez probably is an upgrade over Abraham Nunez, Tomas Perez and Matt Kata. His addition could result in the release of Perez, who is entering the second year of a two-year deal. When are teams ever going to learn not to give multiyear deals to utilitymen?

Wilson Ramos
D.L.
Wilson Ramos said Wednesday that he expects to undergo surgery to repair his torn right ACL in 2-3 weeks.
Ramos also confirmed to reporters that he has no chance of returning this season. Jesus Flores has taken over as the Nationals' starting catcher and deserves to be owned in mixed fantasy leagues with spots for two backstops. Ramos batted .265/.354/.398 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 25 games this season.

Sandy Leon
D.L.
Nationals placed C Sandy Leon on the 60-day disabled list with a high right ankle sprain.
Leon suffered the injury just four innings into his major league debut Monday when he was involved in a collision with Padres' third baseman Chase Headley at home plate. The timetable for his return isn't clear, but he isn't eligible to come off the disabled list until mid-July. Carlos Maldonado has been called up from Triple-A Syracuse to take his place on the active roster.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Thursday that Chris Marrero had a setback with his shoulder.
Marrero was already rehabbing a torn left hamstring, but the shoulder injury means he might not be ready to play again for another month or two. The 23-year-old batted .248/.274/.294 with five doubles and 10 RBI in 117 plate appearances for the Nationals down the stretch last season.

Ryan Zimmerman
Sidelined
Ryan Zimmerman didn't start Tuesday due to recurring soreness in his right shoulder.
Zimmerman missed a couple weeks of action in late April and early May due to soreness in the AC joint in his right shoulder, and it sounds like it's an issue again. The good news is that Nationals manager Davey Johnson had to force him to sit out Tuesday, and Zimmerman is expected to return to the lineup Wednesday. But, it's a concern moving forward if he can't shake the shoulder woes. Zimmerman is batting just .273 with one homer over 55 at-bats since returning from the DL.

Mark DeRosa
D.L.
Mark DeRosa (oblique) threw and took dry swings Thursday.
DeRosa did both at about 50-60 percent, so he's being eased into baseball activities. He will travel with the Nationals on their upcoming road trip and could return from the disabled list late next week.

Michael Morse
D.L.
Michael Morse (lat) traveled to the Nationals' complex in Viera, Florida on Monday to continue his rehab process.
Morse recently began baseball activities after being shut down in April with a torn right lat muscle. He's scheduled to hit on Tuesday and could soon begin playing in extended spring training games. If all goes well, he could be activated from the disabled list in the first week of June.

Jayson Werth
D.L.
Nationals manager Davey Johnson indicated Monday that because Jayson Werth had surgery so quickly after suffering a broken left wrist, he might be able to cut three weeks off his recovery time.
Werth was told the news by the doctor who operated on his wrist at the Mayo Clinic. The timetable was originally estimated to be around 12 weeks, but there's now a chance that he could return to action in late July or early August. There's still a long way to go, but it's about time the Nationals got some good news on the injury front.

Drew Storen (elbow) is aiming to return to the Nationals around the All-Star break.
We heard earlier this week from manager Davey Johnson that Storen could begin a minor league rehab assignment later this month, but it doesn't sound like that's the case. The closer made 100 light throws in a game of catch Wednesday, and there's currently no timetable for his return to the mound. Henry Rodriguez will continue to close until Storen is ready, assuming he hasn't lost the job by then.

Brad Lidge is slated to throw a bullpen session Wednesday for the first time since undergoing hernia surgery on May 1.
If all goes well, he'll head to the team's complex in Viera, Florida on Thursday to ramp up the rehab process. He's currently aiming to rejoin the Nats' bullpen on June 15.

Ryan Mattheus
D.L.
Updating a previous item, Ryan Mattheus has been diagnosed with a partial tear in the plantar fascia in his left foot.
Mattheus was apparently given the news when he visited a specialist Tuesday in Baltimore. He'll need to wear a walking boot for a few weeks, but should be able to continue some lifting and throwing while his foot heals. He is headed to the disabled list while Chien-Ming Wang (hamstring) will replace him on the active roster.

Nationals placed RHP Cole Kimball on the 60-day disabled list with a right shoulder injury.
Kimball underwent major shoulder surgery last July and is not expected to be ready for live action until right around the All-Star break this year. The 26-year-old right-hander will likely be stationed at Triple-A Syracuse once he returns to full health.
