Edgardo Alfonzo is hoping to receive an invite to spring training from some team this winter, hopefully the Mets.
Since Alfonzo last appeared in a major league uniform back in 2006 and has been playing in Long Island, Mexico, Venezuela and Japan since. He won the Japanese championship with the Yomiuri Giants last season but hit just .146/.293/.217 in 41 at-bats. A non-roster invite to the Mets' spring training would be a nice feel-good story, but anything more than that and the story then just becomes another example of Met futility.

Edgardo Alfonzo, who last played in the majors with the Blue Jays in 2006, has signed on with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan.
Alfonzo hit .322/.383/.483 in 242 at-bats in the Venezuelan Winter League, but he wasn't drawing significant interest from major league teams. The 35-year-old spent 2008 playing in Mexico after failing to make the Rangers out of spring training.

Free agent Edgardo Alfonzo went 2-for-3 hit his seventh homer of the VWL season on Wednesday.
Alfonzo is batting .371/.432/.581 in 124 at-bats. He currently ranks fifth in the eight-team league in homers and seventh in OPS.
Thu, Nov 20, 2008 02:04:00 PM
Edgardo Alfonzo homered, doubled and drove in three runs Saturday for Magallanes of the VWL.
After being let go by the Rangers at the end of spring training, Alfonzo spent time in Mexico this year, hitting a disappointing .280/.355/.379 in 214 at-bats. He's 7-for-20 with two homers so far in Venezuela. Some team will likely give him a minor league contract this winter.

Rangers placed 2B Ian Kinsler on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 18, with an intercostal strain.
Kinsler hasn't started the last two games with rib soreness and said he still felt discomfort during batting practice on Sunday. The Rangers aren't overly concerned about the injury, but top prospect Jurickson Profar will be called up to replace Kinsler on the active roster. Kinsler is batting .302/.369/.500 with seven home runs through his first 40 games this season.

Matt Harrison
D.L.
Matt Harrison recently had a setback with his back that required an additional surgery on Wednesday.
Harrison underwent an operation on April 23 to repair a herniated disk in his lower back but began feeling additional discomfort this week, necessitating another procedure. According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers are "operating under the assumption that Harrison will pitch again this season, but he will be out for at least three months." In other words, we won't see him again until August at the earliest, and it seems like there's a good chance it will be longer than that.

Alexi Ogando (biceps) has been playing catch but said he is only throwing around "40 percent."
"I don't know when they'll let me throw hard," the right-hander added. Ogando said that he's feeling better, so there's definitely some progress even if it might be coming slowly. There is no structural damage in Ogando's biceps, but it's unclear when he'll return.

Nick Tepesch has been scratched from his Wednesday start due to a blister on his right middle finger.

Colby Lewis
D.L.
Colby Lewis (elbow) acknowledged on Monday afternoon that he's unhappy with his fastball velocity.
Lewis was sitting around 85-86 mph in his rehab start Monday at Double-A Frisco and wants to be closer to 89-91 mph by the time he returns to the major leagues. The hope had been that he would be ready to rock during the first week of June, but a more realistic timetable calls for him to be activated near the middle of the month. Lewis is on his way back from major right elbow surgery.

Neftali Feliz
D.L.
Neftali Feliz (elbow) is long-tossing at 120 feet.
Feliz's rehab from Tommy John surgery is going fine, although it's not yet been announced when he'll be ready to throw off a mound. We expect him to return to a major league mound late in the summer.

Joakim Soria (elbow) will be shut down for 2-3 weeks with a strained pectoral muscle and is now not expected to return until around July 1.
A tough break for the Rangers, as Soria had been slated to join the Rangers' bullpen as soon as late next month. The good news is that his surgically-repaired elbow is fine. The Rangers will continue to use a host of players to set up for Joe Nathan.
