At his request, John Rocker was released today by the independant Long Island Ducks.
Rocker had a 6.50 ERA and a 19/28 K/BB ratio in 18 innings for the Atlantic League club. ''After pitching for two months with the Long Island Ducks, the consistency required to pitch at the major league level, and the consistency I demand from myself, are not where they should be,'' Rocker said in a statement released by the team. ''As a result, I have elected to take a step back and re-evaluate the options available to me.''

LHP John Rocker has signed with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League.
In Rocker's most recent comeback attempt, he gave up four runs and walked six in 2 2/3 innings in the Venezuelan Winter League. The 30-year-old hasn't pitched in the majors since making two appearances with the Rays in 2003.

Free agent John Rocker gave up a run in his inning of work yesterday for Lara of the Venezuelan Winter League.
Rocker allowed a hit, walked two and threw a wild pitch. He has a 13.50 ERA in six appearances covering 2 2/3 innings.

After allowing three runs without retiring a batter in his first appearance, Rocker has pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. It's a start.

Joyce left Tuesday's game with right hamstring tightness, so it's not a surprise that he's not ready to play for the afternoon game. However, it's not known how much time he'll need to miss. Sean Rodriguez is playing right field Wednesday.

Rays placed LHP David Price on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left triceps muscle.
Price suffered the injury Wednesday night in his start against the Red Sox. An MRI taken shortly after his exit showed no major damage and the Rays are optimistic that he will only miss a few turns in the rotation, but nothing is certain quite yet. Jake Odorizzi and Chris Archer are the primary candidates to replace Price.

Gomes had been pitching well for Tampa, putting up a 1.03 WHIP and 16/2 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be out. Josh Lueke has replaced him on the roster.

Rays transferred RHP Jeff Niemann from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired Jeff Beliveau. Niemann underwent shoulder surgery last week and is unlikely to return this season.

Rays purchased the contract of RHP Juan Carlos Oviedo, placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Oviedo is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and will miss most, if not all, of the 2013 season. The Rays obviously have decided he's worth hanging onto in hopes he can contribute in 2014.
