Trying to close in place of the resting Jose Valverde, Octavio Dotel was charged with a blown save and a loss Monday against the Mariners.
The Tigers were up 2-0 when Dotel took over to start the ninth. He walked the first two hitters he faced and then advanced the baserunners with a wild pitch. After a passed ball scored the first run, Jesus Montero doubled to tie it. Duane Below took over at that point and allowed the winning run to score on a sac bunt and then a sac fly. Dotel probably isn't looking at any additional save chances in the near future.

Octavio Dotel returned to action Friday and pitched a perfect inning against the White Sox.
Dotel wasn't available Thursday due to back stiffness.

Octavio Dotel was unavailable Thursday after his back stiffened up while sleeping.
He should be good to go in the next day or two. Dotel has struck out four over two scoreless innings of relief this season.

Tigers signed RHP Octavio Dotel to a one-year, $3 million contract with a $3.5 million club option for 2013.
The Tigers will pay him a $500,000 buyout if they don't exercise the 2013 option. The 38-year-old right-hander posted a 3.50 ERA and 62/17 K/BB ratio over 54 frames between Toronto and St. Louis this past season. He'll help set up for Jose Valverde.

A-Jax was penciled into the initial release of the Detroit batting order but apparently felt lingering discomfort in his abdomen during pregame warmups. The 25-year-old center fielder will try again Wednesday.

Victor Martinez (knee surgery) has been off crutches for 10 days.
Martinez had microfracture surgery on his left knee in late January and underwent a procedure in early March to help the healing of his ACL. V-Mart can't afford any setbacks, but he's encouraged about the possibility of returning in September. We should know more about his status when he undergoes an MRI during a check-up in July.

Valverde hasn't pitched since last Tuesday because of lower back tightness. The 34-year-old right-hander has a 5.51 ERA and is just 7-for-9 in save opportunities this season but remains a strong fantasy option at closer and should be made active in all leagues immediately.

Luis Marte (hamstring) tossed three scoreless innings Monday in a rehab appearance at Triple-A Toledo.
Marte walked one and struck out two while allowing just one hit. He needed only 35 total pitches to get through the three solid frames. The right-hander should be ready for activation from the disabled list within the next few days but might just remain stationed in the Toledo 'pen.

Tigers transferred RHP Al Alburquerque from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster. Alburquerque is currently working his way back from right elbow surgery and is unlikely to return to the majors until July.
