Matt Cain yielded 11 hits in seven innings Tuesday to the Brewers but managed to escape with a win.
Cain looked nasty at times, fanning eight batters without issuing a walk, but he also left a few too many balls over the plate in the comfortable hitting environment of Milwaukee's Miller Park. The 27-year-old right-hander will carry a 4-2 record, 2.94 ERA and 0.94 WHIP into his next scheduled outing against the Marlins.
May 22 - 11:37 PM
Matt Cain limited the Diamondbacks to one run and three hits in six innings and drove in two runs Saturday to pick up a win.
Cain has always struggled to get run support, but he successfully took matters into his own hands tonight. The win was just his second in seven starts, though he ranks among the NL leaders with his 2.28 ERA.
May 12 - 11:36 PM
Matt Cain limited the Brewers to two runs over seven innings Sunday but ended up with a no-decision.
Cain was impressive yet again, striking out 10 and walking just one as he lowered his season WHIP to 0.73. But the Giants' defense and Santiago Casilla let them down in the ninth inning, blowing a 3-2 lead. Cain, always starving for run support, remains 1-2 on the season despite a 2.38 ERA through six starts. He has to go to Arizona next time out.
May 6 - 8:59 PM
Matt Cain limited the Marlins to two runs in eight innings Tuesday, only to fall to 1-2 anyway.
We're not going to check or anything, but we'd guess Cain has been on the wrong end of more 2-1 scores than any other pitcher in the league these last five years. He's 1-2 with a 2.35 ERA and an incredible 0.68 WHIP after five starts this season.

Freddy Sanchez
D.L.
Freddy Sanchez has reported improvement since receiving an epidural injection in his lower back, but he's yet to be cleared to resume baseball-related activities.
It's pointless to attach a timetable to Sanchez at this point. He's still not able to make pain-free throws from second base due to his surgically-repaired shoulder, and his back might be an even bigger issue at this point. The Giants are seeking middle infield help from outside the organization.
May 18
2
Ryan Theriot
D.L.
Ryan Theriot (elbow) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Thursday.
It's the first day he's eligible. Theriot is expected to battle Emmanuel Burriss for playing time upon activation. "It'll be competitive. I'll leave it at that," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We'll go with the hot hand. Theriot has a resume and a history of hitting."

Pablo Sandoval will have the stitches removed from his surgically-repaired left hand Monday.
"I feel good," Sandoval said. "I'm trying to be patient and get ready." Sandoval underwent surgery on May 4 to repair his fractured left hamate bone. It sounds like his recovery is going as planned, and, barring a setback, he's expected to return in mid-June.

D.L.
Eric Surkamp has experienced a setback in his recovery from a strained left elbow tendon.
When asked Thursday whether Surkamp might need surgery Giants manager Bruce Bochy replied simply: "Obviously there's concern." The 24-year-old left-hander has been out of commission since the end of spring training and might not return this season.

Suspended
Guillermo Mota will appeal his suspension for a second positive test for a performance-enhancing drug.
However, as second-time offender, he must begin serving the suspension immediately. Mota tested positive for Clenbuterol, which is used mostly as a weight-loss supplement. The veteran righty has a 5.06 ERA and 9/4 K/BB ratio in 10 2/3 innings this season.
May 7
7
Dan Runzler
D.L.
Giants placed LHP Dan Runzler on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26, with a strained lat muscle.
Runzler aggravated an injury from last year earlier this month and was given a 4-6 week timetable to recover. It appears he might be a little ahead of that projection, but he might be optioned to Triple-A once he's healthy.

Brian Wilson
D.L.
Brian Wilson (elbow) considers himself ahead of schedule in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Wilson, who underwent the procedure in late April, fully expects to be ready for the start of next season. "I’ll be closing unless someone throws a complete game," Wilson said. "Which would be sweet." It's good that Wilson is so upbeat, but he's obviously got a long way to go before we can identify a firm timetable on him.
