Kevin Youkilis wasted no time, homering in his first game back Tuesday against the Orioles.
That homer was his only hit of the night and he struck out in his other two at-bats, but it's still a step in the right direction for Youk. Now healthy, he should be able to improve on his .224 average over the next few weeks. With Adrian Gonzalez shifting to the outfield, it appears that Youkilis will make the majority of his starts at first base. Will Middlebrooks will continue to play third.
May 22 - 10:17 PM
Red Sox activated INF Kevin Youkilis from the 15-day disabled list.
Youkilis is starting at first base on Tuesday night against the Orioles, with Will Middlebrooks at third base and Adrian Gonzalez in right field. It's a lineup that should be common in Boston going forward. Youk returns to a .219/.292/.344 batting line, two home runs and nine RBI.
May 22 - 4:14 PM
Kevin Youkilis (back) went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and an RBI on Monday in his final rehab game with Triple-A Pawtucket.
He also played all nine innings at third base. Youkilis went 4-for-11 with two doubles and three walks over three games with the PawSox and is expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday. It was assumed that Will Middlebrooks would be optioned back to the minor leagues in a corresponding roster move, but he'll likely stick around now that Cody Ross (foot) is headed for the disabled list.

Kevin Youkilis (back) will play third base for Triple-A Pawtucket Monday and is expected to be activated by the Red Sox Tuesday.
Assuming everything checks out OK on Tuesday, Youk will be activated. Vultures are circling Boston, monitoring the veteran third baseman's status. The Red Sox could deal Youkilis if it decides to hand the hot corner long-term to top prospect Will Middlebrooks.

Carl Crawford
D.L.
Carl Crawford (wrist, elbow) believes he's 7-10 days away from picking up the pace in his rehab work.
"It would be swinging a bat before throwing,’’ Crawford said. "It’s frustrating being out, but I want to make sure I don’t have any setbacks with it.’’ Crawford's surgically-repaired wrist doesn't seem to be an issue anymore, but a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow is. The 30-year-old outfielder is hoping to return to the majors before the All-Star break.
May 13
2
Cody Ross
D.L.
Red Sox placed OF Cody Ross on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left foot.
Ross was optimistic that he might be able to avoid the disabled list Tuesday when speaking with reporters, but a second opinion on the MRI results of his foot dispelled any hope that his fracture was from a previous injury. The 31-year-old outfielder could need around six weeks of recovery time. Scott Podsednik has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move.

Jacoby Ellsbury
D.L.
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine indicated Monday that Jacoby Ellsbury (shoulder) is unlikely to return when he's first eligible on June 13.
Ellsbury was recently transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list as he continues to work his way back from a dislocated right shoulder. The 28-year-old was originally expected to miss around two months after suffering the injury on April 13, but the timetable is a bit of a moving target depending upon his progress. He just recently began weight-bearing exercises.

Ryan Sweeney
D.L.
Red Sox placed OF Ryan Sweeney on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to May 20, with a concussion.
Sweeney suffered the head injury and whiplash Saturday while making a diving catch. It's not clear how long he'll be out. He failed a concussion test given Monday.
May 22
2
Darnell McDonald
D.L.
Red Sox placed OF Darnell McDonald on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 12, with a strained oblique.
It seems likely to be a longer than minimum stay on the DL. McDonald is batting just .179/.277/.357 this season, so he won't be terribly missed.
May 13
3
Ryan Kalish
D.L.
Ryan Kalish (shoulder) has begun playing long-toss and taking regular live batting practice.
Kalish, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list in early-April, is working out at the Red Sox' extended spring training complex in Florida. "He's coming along and he's hitting on a field," GM Ben Cherington said Thursday. "So we'll let him do that for a little while and get him some live BP and then get him into game action down there." There's no timetable for his return to the majors.

The wound on Aaron Cook's left knee has yet to fully heal, and he will not be allowed to pitch until it does.
Cook has had the stitches in his knee removed and reportedly was allowed to throw a bullpen session over this past weekend. It sounds like the Red Sox are scaling back his activity, though. His rehab will go quickly once he's cleared to throw again.
May 22
7
Daisuke Matsuzaka
D.L.
Red Sox transferred RHP Daisuke Matsuzka from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
Dice-K's rehab from elbow surgery has stalled due to neck soreness. It's not clear when he might be ready.
May 22
8
John Lackey
D.L.
John Lackey (recovery from elbow surgery) opted against attending Red Sox Opening Day.
Team player. Considering the reception he was likely to receive, however, we don't blame him. Five months removed from undergoing Tommy John surgery, Lackey isn't known to have resumed throwing. Six months shy of his 34th birthday, Lackey is making $15.25 million not to pitch this season, and is due another $15.25 million in 2013 after posting a 4.40 ERA in 2011. It's perhaps the worst contract ever handed out by former Red Sox GM Theo Epstein.

Andrew Bailey (thumb) is expected to begin a throwing program next week.
Bailey had a checkup Wednesday with Dr. Thomas Graham and apparently showed good progress. The right-hander is aiming to join the Red Sox near the All-Star break and should take over the ninth-inning gig within a week or two of being activated.

Bobby Jenks posted bail Friday after being arrested on five charges, four of which that were related to driving under the influence.
According to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal, Jenks was charged with one count of driving under the influence, three counts of driving under the influence and damage to property and one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving damage to property. The big right-hander dealt with lots of off-the-field issues during his minor league days but had been relatively well behaved since making to the majors. He was already slated to miss the first half of the season after undergoing two back surgeries.

Chris Carpenter
D.L.
Red Sox placed RHP Chris Carpenter on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Carpenter is scheduled to undergo surgery soon to remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow. The 26-year-old right-hander will be out of commission for a couple months.
