Sean Marshall retired the only batter he faced to nail down his eighth save of the season in Monday's win over the Braves.
With Aroldis Chapman unavailable due to his recent workload, Jose Arredondo started the ninth and retired the first two batters, but Marshall came on to record the final out after Arredondo issued a couple walks. The lefty will get the occasional save chance when Chapman has been overworked.

Sean Marshall was pulled from a save opportunity Saturday against the Yankees.
Marshall entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a three-run cushion, but he allowed two runs on four hits before getting pulled in favor of Jose Arredondo. Arredondo then got Derek Jeter to hit into a fielder's choice and Curtis Granderson on a ground out to first base to end it. Marshall has only blown one save in eight tries this year and has a solid 21/3 K K/BB ratio, but he owns an ugly 5.02 ERA over 14 1/3 innings. If the Reds truly have no intention of putting Aroldis Chapman in the rotation this year, the hard-throwing left-hander could eventually threaten for the closer job.

Sean Marshall converted his first save in May Monday, allowing a hit while striking out two in a scoreless inning against the Braves.
Matt Diaz singled to lead off the inning, but Marshall then got a flyout and a pair of punchouts to close the door. Marshall's 4.15 ERA and 1.54 WHIP pale in comparison to Aroldis Chapman's numbers, but he should still have a pretty decent leash in the ninth inning.

Sean Marshall was pulled out of a save opportunity after giving up a run in the ninth inning against the Brewers on Wednesday.
After taking over in a 2-0 game, Marshall gave up a solo homer to Ryan Braun and then two more hits. He ended up throwing 35 pitches to get just two outs. Still, he was taken out with the lead intact, and he ended up with the hold after Logan Ondrusek retired pinch-hitter Travis Ishikawa to end the game. Marshall's job as Cincinnati's closer is still safe.

Rolen was placed on the disabled list earlier this month with a strained left shoulder and has yet to resume swinging a bat. Reds manager Dusty Baker said on Saturday that he's not sure when the 37-year-old third baseman will be ready to return. With his future very much in doubt, Todd Frazier makes for a smart pickup in deeper mixed formats.

Masset hasn't picked up a ball since being shut down from throwing in mid-April when he felt renewed soreness in his shoulder. "We've got our fingers crossed that he doesn't feel anything and that it's healed," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "I know he's champing at the bit."

Bill Bray (groin) remains without a timetable.
Bray made a rehab appearance with Triple-A Louisville last month, but has been strictly working at extended spring training, and recently reported a setback. "We're trying to get him through that," GM Walt Jocketty said. "His mechanics got out of whack because of the [groin] injury. Now he's having problems with his lower back."

Ryan Madson's rehab from Tommy John surgery began Tuesday.
"It’s Day One of rehab," Madson said. "It’s the first day I’ve been out of my brace. It feels good." Madson, of course, will miss all of the 2012 season, but he's hoping to be ready for the start of 2013. He'll be a free agent this winter
