Max Scherzer turned in one of the finest starts of the young major league season on Sunday, holding the Pirates to two runs on four hits in seven innings of work while striking out a career-high 15 batters.
Scherzer walked one in completing seven innings of work for just the second time in 2012. The 15 punchouts are the most by any pitcher this season, though the 14-strikeout day was the second of Scherzer's career. He famously fanned 14 A's in just 5 2/3 innings on May 30, 2010. The dominating effort lowers Scherzer's ERA from 6.26 to 5.73, while he's now the owner of a 1.58 WHIP and 63/19 K/BB ratio through 48 2/3 innings. We'd like to say it's a sign of things to come for Detroit's inconsistent right-hander, but it's almost certainly not. He has an excellent matchup lined up for the weekend, however, where he'll take on the Twins in Minnesota.

Max Scherzer yielded two runs in 6 1/3 innings and struck out nine in a win over the A's on Thursday.
Scherzer is up to 46 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings for the season, though that comes with a 5.73 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. He still projects as a decent enough mixed-league starter going forward, though he'll likely remain inconsistent.

Max Scherzer turned in his best outing of the 2012 season against the White Sox on Saturday, allowing just one run on four hits over seven strong innings.
Scherzer punched out nine and didn't walk a batter in the game. He believed that he found and corrected a flaw in his delivery this week, and the results were definitely better on Saturday. The right-hander's improved command was noticeable, and hopefully something that will carry over next week when he squares off against the Athletics in Oakland.

Max Scherzer and Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones believe they have found a flaw in the struggling pitcher's delivery.
Jones commented that Scherzer has "gotten into a little bit of a habit of carrying [his hands] behind his body too far. That affects his lead arm getting on the target and staying there long enough." The 27-year-old certainly is better than how he pitched in April. We will see whether these adjustments help to turn his season around.

Victor Martinez (knee surgery) has been off crutches for 10 days.
Martinez had microfracture surgery on his left knee in late January and underwent a procedure in early March to help the healing of his ACL. V-Mart can't afford any setbacks, but he's encouraged about the possibility of returning in September. We should know more about his status when he undergoes an MRI during a check-up in July.

Valverde hasn't pitched since last Tuesday because of lower back tightness. The 34-year-old right-hander has a 5.51 ERA and is just 7-for-9 in save opportunities this season but remains a strong fantasy option at closer and should be made active in all leagues immediately.

Luis Marte (hamstring) tossed three scoreless innings Monday in a rehab appearance at Triple-A Toledo.
Marte walked one and struck out two while allowing just one hit. He needed only 35 total pitches to get through the three solid frames. The right-hander should be ready for activation from the disabled list within the next few days but might just remain stationed in the Toledo 'pen.

Good news. Schlereth is already performing range of motion exercises and should soon be cleared to resume throwing. He's been on the disabled list since late April.

Al Alburquerque (elbow) has begun long-tossing at the Tigers' spring training facility in Florida.
Albuquerque is throwing from 150 feet, and if he continues to be progress should be cleared to throw off a mound before long. The Tigers are hoping to get the hard-throwing reliever back around the All-Star break.
