Mark Melancon earned his first save of the season Wednesday as the Pirates defeated the Cubs.
Jason Grilli threw 35 pitches on Tuesday night and was unavailable on Wednesday, so Melancon filled in and was able to convert. That setup man and closer combo has been excellent all season for the Pirates.

Mark Melancon recorded his 10th hold by pitching a scoreless eighth in front of Jason Grilli on Wednesday.
Melancon has been outstanding, with an identical 0.60 ERA and 0.60 WHIP, but he hasn't made any inroads on Grilli's job, not with Grilli sporting a 0.75 ERA himself. Give the Pirates' bullpen a lot of credit for the team's hot start; of the four relievers used today, the weakest had a 1.59 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP.

Mark Melancon pitched a hitless frame Friday in the Pirates' 6-4 victory over the Rays.
Melancon's 5/4 K/BB ratio isn't very impressive, but he's allowed just two runs -- one earned -- in eight innings this spring. It's not going to move him past Jason Grilli into the closer's role for the Pirates right away, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the two switch spots at some point during the season.

Pirates acquired RHP Mark Melancon from the Red Sox in the Joel Hanrahan deal.
Melancon had a rough 6.20 ERA in 41 appearances with the Red Sox this past season, but he was a different pitcher after his first few outings. He's also only a year removed from a 2.78 ERA, 20 saves and a 66/26 K/BB ratio over 74 1/3 innings with the Astros. With multiple years of team control left, he has a chance be be an excellent buy-low.

Starling Marte went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored as the Pirates beat the Reds 4-0 on Tuesday.
Marte was the catalyst of the Pirates offense on Tuesday. The triple led off the game and was the Pirates' only extra-base hit of the night. He later scored before singling in a run of his own in the seventh inning. Marte also stole a base in the game, his 21st of the season.

Assuming he progresses on schedule, Tabata is slated to begin a rehab assignment on June 21. He should rejoin the Pirates before the end of the month.

A.J. Burnett said Friday that he has a Grade 1 tear in his right calf.
Burnett, who was placed on the disabled list Thursday, said he currently can't put any weight on his leg. There's no clear timetable for his return, but the veteran right-hander said that he hopes it's "not a six-week thing." The Pirates and fantasy owners are hoping the game, but it doesn't sound like he'll be back when he's first eligible.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Monday that Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) "felt good" while throwing off the mound Monday.
It's not clear what the next step will be, but it could be enough for the Pirates to send him out on a rehab start. Rodriguez has been sidelined since June 5 with left forearm tightness.

James McDonald (shoulder) might be moved to the bullpen when he is activated from the disabled list.
Gerrit Cole's promotion and Charlie Morton's return created a potential logjam in the Pittsburgh rotation and McDonald is probably going to have to be the odd man out. The 28-year-old righty owns a 5.76 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 29 2/3 innings this season. He is on the 15-day DL currently because of inflammation in his shoulder.

Jeff Karstens (shoulder) underwent rotator cuff and labrum surgery on Friday.
Karstens will be shut down for a minimum of 10-12 weeks as he recovers from the injury. He had been aiming to join the Pirates' starting rotation in early June, but is now unlikely to return this season.
