Justin Verlander carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning Friday against the Pirates.
His no-hit bid was broken up when Josh Harrison singled with one out in the ninth. Verlander, who already has two career no-hitters, ended up settling for a complete game one-hitter as part of a 6-0 win. He issued two walks to Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen, but retired 18 straight at one point, and struck out 12 of a possible 30 batters. Of his 109 pitches, 76 were for strikes. He's now 5-1 with a 2.14 ERA through his first nine starts this year.
May 18 - 9:40 PM
Justin Verlander had a callus develop on his thumb Sunday and crack open, but he doesn't expect to miss his next start.
It began to bleed in the seventh inning, which forced an early exit. Verlander still allowed just one run on a pair of hits over seven frames against a depleted Oakland lineup. "We'll just have to wait and see, but I don't think it's much of one," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said when asked how big a concern Verlander's thumb is. "You can do miracles with that kind of stuff today. We'll just have to wait and see. I'm not exactly sure how it's happening." Verlander was even more confident in his availability. "After getting up here after the game and kind of working on it a little bit, I think it's going to be fine," he said. In other words, nothing to see here.

Justin Verlander predictably dominated the Athletics Sunday, giving up just two hits and one run over seven innings.
Verlander couldn't have asked for a better spot. He was in pitcher-friendly Oakland and facing a lineup that didn't include Brandon Inge (groin), Kurt Suzuki (thumb), Yoenis Cespedes (hand), Kile Ka'aihue (hamstring) and Jemile Weeks (rest). Verlander struck out eight and his WHIP is now down to 0.87. He'll get another soft matchup when he faces the Pirates next week.
May 13 - 8:18 PM
Justin Verlander yielded three runs in six innings Tuesday in a victory over the Mariners.
This won't go down as one of Verlander's better outings of the season, but it was good enough. He needed 113 pitches to get through six innings against the weak Seattle lineup. He allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out six.

Victor Martinez (knee surgery) has been off crutches for 10 days.
Martinez had microfracture surgery on his left knee in late January and underwent a procedure in early March to help the healing of his ACL. V-Mart can't afford any setbacks, but he's encouraged about the possibility of returning in September. We should know more about his status when he undergoes an MRI during a check-up in July.

Sidelined
Jose Valverde (back) is available Tuesday night.
Valverde hasn't pitched since last Tuesday because of lower back tightness. The 34-year-old right-hander has a 5.51 ERA and is just 7-for-9 in save opportunities this season but remains a strong fantasy option at closer and should be made active in all leagues immediately.

Luis Marte (hamstring) tossed three scoreless innings Monday in a rehab appearance at Triple-A Toledo.
Marte walked one and struck out two while allowing just one hit. He needed only 35 total pitches to get through the three solid frames. The right-hander should be ready for activation from the disabled list within the next few days but might just remain stationed in the Toledo 'pen.

Daniel Schlereth
D.L.
AN MRI taken Wednesday on Daniel Schlereth's ailing left shoulder showed no structural damage.
Good news. Schlereth is already performing range of motion exercises and should soon be cleared to resume throwing. He's been on the disabled list since late April.

D.L.
Al Alburquerque (elbow) has begun long-tossing at the Tigers' spring training facility in Florida.
Albuquerque is throwing from 150 feet, and if he continues to be progress should be cleared to throw off a mound before long. The Tigers are hoping to get the hard-throwing reliever back around the All-Star break.
